I purchased a home made vehicle a couple years ago, and finally have the space and time to work on it. Its more or less a car of many eras put into one. its a 1927 Cadillac frame,
with the engine and tranny from a 1967 Impala... 283 sbc , powerglide transmission. The body is 100% handmade , sheet metal skin over hardwood inner framing. Styled to look like a 1930 Packard Roadster. Sat in a barn for 20+ years before I bought it.
Here's where i'm at... cleaned out carb, new alternator, starter and fuel pump, starts up no issues,
Problem 1.... drinks gas like I do beer. The vacuum lines in some cases are either missing ( ie; ports from carb are open )
Problem 2... new alternator doesn't have internal volt reg, I picked up an external, but still not charging battery... hooked up as per the diagram, but no luck...ideas?
Is anybody here well versed with the vacuum systems on this engine? I can send pics or better yet stop by.... always cold ones on hand...

.Brian Seems to me that you could have a one wire alternator Im sure gm had internal regulator by 67 have you revved the snot out of it to see if it starts charging? If you have a parts source around they can test it to see if it works. if it's tost replace it with a 3 wire . If you're just running off the battery I wouldn't worry about the rest till you correct that first . Don't know a whole lot about 283s but my brother had one in a z28 and it was a pig for fuel

GM never had the internal regulator until around 75, about the same time as HEI. Find one of those, they are easy to wire up
As for the carb, plug all the vacuum leaks and it should run better.
No particular advantage to a one wire. Except when it pukes you have to replace the whole deal instead of just a regulator. The actual alternators give little trouble. To test alt apply battery voltage to the F terminal and it should charge immediately. Use a voltmeter to diagnos although you will hear the motor load down when you power the field in many cases. If it is the newer style alt you can bypass the internal regulator through the funny shaped hole in the rear of the case. Vacuum hoses should be easy. Need pics.
