1957 SuperTurboFire (220hp PowerPack 283 canister oil Filter

Hey folks.

I had the 57 out for a spin and then changed the oil.  Let it drain overnight, then reached into my case of AC-Delco canister oil filters(8 left) and oull the filter and oil seal out of the box and wipe off the engine block part, slip the new O ring seal into the groove in the block, then ran the canister back up to the new seal.  Filled the crankcase with 5 liters, 4 for the engine, 1 for the filter.

I fire her up and see a small leak running down the outside of the canister, so I loosened it off an re-adjusted. It might have a tiny ooze stil, but I havent put it on teh rack to see under it yet.

Anyone else have finicky canister oil filters?  57 is the 2nd year for oil filters on the SBC the 1956 265 was the 1first engine to get an oil filter..

Here is a pic: Dad sure did good work when he built this car in 1992. Multiple Platinum CCC awards, I feel honoured to be able to drive it, the car is etched on his gravestone.  He built it to drive and drive he did. Since 1992 Mom and Dad put 75,000 miles on the Southern Belle.

Thanks in advance!

Nice car.

Sometimes the old seal gets baked onto the block and it doesn't get removed. Its possible you have put a new seal over top of an old seal and it could be the source of your leak. The best way to check for an old seal being stuck to the block is to remove the oil filter adapter (2 bolts) and pick the old seal of the block and make sure the surface is smooth and clean.

Bruce is dead right on that ..It's the most lilely reason for the leak either dirt,or part or all of the old seal is still up in the grove where the round seal goes at the top of the canister..

It will always be his "Southern Belle".  He passed away 23 months ago.  If you knew Dad from back in the day, check out my "Shoutout from Woodstock" thread in the "Introductions"-section, lotsa pics of his "diamondback" car, his trike and his 5 person bike he built.

The oil filter seems to be fine, the seal is holding fine.
