On the topic of spectator turnout dropping off at car events posted a bit ago, thought this was interesting:

Today i talked to a friend and his wife who are into  horse rodeos, horse shows, all types of horse events.

They brought up the subject about the poor spectator turnout lately, according to them the stands are getting emptier all the time.

So, it appears this just not realted to automotive events.

contrary to what the spin doctors would like us to believe, the economy is still circling the bowl. add in the cost of fuel and it makes folks tend to stay home. we see it alot around here in the tourist trade.

Its happening everywhere, a lot of it comes down to well...greed.

$6 for a bottle of water
$6 for a hotdog
$8 for a hamburger
etc etc

Add in the price of the ticket to get in, gas and all the other little things and folks are just fed up with paying outrageous prices for everything.

If venues would go back to charging realistic prices for items, folks may start to come back out, but once it gets out there what they are charging for things, people move away.

Of course most people having their faces stuck in the phones/computers all day does not help either.

I agree that the cost of attending events has an impact, but I also think that the interest is no longer there either.
Three types of shows in particular that I see suffering are horse, steam and cars. While each of these shows has a loyal core, I don't see new people coming in at a rate that offset's the mortality rate.
Just a fact on these types of events.

I think the bolded portion is a major factor these days.

Plus the fact that younger people have different interests.
Go to any car show, cruise in etc. and you will notice it's mostly people over 50.
You don't have to buy the bottled water and the crappy food, so that doesn't make a big difference in attendance.

"kids" walking past don't even look at cars as they pass these days

no wonder their parrents aren't takeing them to car shows or races

On the other side I'm told that the 'Nitro Nationals' last weekend at Toronto Motorsports Park [Cayuga] was standing room only.10,000 plus spectators and the local cruise night [Benmar] is full with a line up of cars waiting to get in . People are definatly getting more choosy on what they spend their money on and where they go.

I was at benmar last weekend with Linda and Jacob and the Camaro. We went early around 5:30 and ate sub's in lawn chairs at the entrance. We left at around 6:45 because it looked like it might rain and the kid was getting tired. The place was pretty well packed at the that point. Still more older folks than younger I believe.

The movie theater in The Cobourg mall was closed by the landlord today . Lack of attendence led to rental arrears. Attendence at the regular showings being down is the reason.Yet he had regular Sunday showing of classic 30s,40s and 50s movies which were very well attended but just not enough to pay the rent. Too bad as I was just there to watch the new Godzilla movie with my son and grandson(a kind of family tradition thing). We had agreat time but it was the first time in many years that I had been in that theater. I do go to the drivein a couple of times a year but it is usually some kind of carclub thing. Ed

Overall we have TOO MUCH ENTERTAINMENT in our lives. Local fairs & sports events are the most obvious examples of this. Never thought we could lawn bowl in the walk ways of the summer/fall fairs. Those are not busy 'cos all your neighbours, that work in downtown Toronto, are flaming their credit cards at one of the 1000 Gov't Casinos in Ontario.
We all comment on the MEGA pay cheques athletes and celebrities command, the amazing costs of attending anything. Those promoters are THROWING stupid amounts of $$$ to get get consumers to attend, to get you to part with your $$$.
Amateur promoters need us to pay to attend, with our cars, so they can "compete" in the entertainment business. Really it's just an ego problem. They need a free gate for 2 reasons 1) attendance figures(ego), 2) won't afford to rent a property (and staff) that would limit walk in, walk out crowd(Greed).
EXCEPTION! a show this weekend with an Iron gate surrounding ENTIRE property, which EASILY would ensure spectators pay their fair share and show-ing vehicles get in free, or compensated. There will be hundreds of show-ers and spectators lined up to hand out their $$$ at that one.
You figure out why.

Look at your cell phone; Video, audio, texting, weather, news headlines, photographs, internet, direct to SpaceBook AND it might even take/make a phone call. I just traded up to a cell phone that takes pictures and sends them. It probably does other stuff as well, I have no idea. I don't care, but MANY do. That is their entertainment.

NASCAR attendance is down about 20%, and those folks are FOAMERS! Most cruise nights are holding their own, some are not. Some weekend local shows are up, some are down.
Our hobby is aging with us. Re think your grave site. You might need a larger one. There's talk of burying our junk with us.

There is no reason to feel anything if I choose to not attend any particular event.
That will be me on the John Deere cutting the grass when you drive by. Honk & Wave, or Stop.

the Kid

The Fall Picton Airfield event is always well attended. 3000 to 4000. I was talking last night at Picton Cruise night with Wuga and DavyG (Picton Cruise attendance is also way up.) and we were saying that the Picton Airfield races are the ones people will be lying about having been there 20 or 30 years from now. The car show there is also getting bigger. There is a "freedom to enjoy" if you will, not found at other events. Why? I don't know, but there is. $5 to watch, to race $20. Food normal prices. No booze which should be a no brainer for any race event and a good old friendly atmosphere as old and new friends meet to race and chew the fat one more time. And I might add a family friendly atmosphere where folks watch their language in mixed company like we did back in the civilized days before acting stupid became badge of honour. I can not take my wife to the other track anymore nor would I want my nieces and nephews there. More booze then gasoline consumed even by some of the drivers and the air is sometimes blue with prison language regardless of who is there.
