Warren Grimm and Neil Candy are taking Neil's belly tanker to Bonneville. The tanker has been there the past two years, but has suffered from overly high temperatures in the head. To solve this problem several measures have been taken. The GMC engine which over the years has been bored repeatedly to finally reach 326 Cu. in was resleeved back to it's original 302 cu. in. Apparently the walls getting too thin cause a rise in temperature. Secondly, there just wasn't enough water in the system to maintain the temp. below 250 for the entire run. Neil fabricated three reservoir tanks to add enough volume to get through the run. These tanks were installed on either side off the oil pan and under the transmission. Of course, there was no room for them and many pieces had to be moved slightly resulting in a whole lot of rerouting. The head has been drilled and tapped to accommodate a multi port water manifold to directly cool around the simeased exhaust ports. A new injection linkage needed to be made to compensate for the manifold. Saturday we spent about 9 hours refitting the transmission blanket to clear the one hose connection and making all new water lines to accommodate the new tanks. It was decided to go with double wall hydraulic hose which is a bitch to get over every outlet but finally perseverance prevailed. When we were at Princess getting the hose, we picked up hose clamps in the hydraulic department which are By this time the mosquitoes were so bad, they halted any further work. The engine is being fired for the first time Sunday and if all goes well, the body will be installed Tuesday. Below are some pictures from Saturday. It is my intension to update this thread each day starting Monday Aug. 4.
As you can see from the pictures, it is like stuffing a corn cob inside a peanut shell.
HI WARREN : I live about 30 minutes from Neil and have had the privilege of visiting him and his shop -- Without sounding too partonizing , his work and his shop are both outstanding . Your involvement with him ( and your own workmanship ) can only achieve greater things . I wish you both tremendous success at B ' Ville -- Please say HI from me , to any members of Inliners Int'l while there . They will be plentiful . Looking forward to your reports . LATER -- DON / fleet 51
Quiet! Unfortunately on the way to the dance under priming, the engine lost oil at the front cover gasket. Last night involved getting inside the peanut and removing the balancer, injection fuel pump, timing cover, other assorted pieces and dropping the front of the pan for clearance to replace the front gasket. The engine is on it's way back together and should probably wake the neighbours around 10:00 tonight. More later.
Jimmy will be singing tomorrow night... Fingers crossed !
Six to go and Eight for show, or something like that... :)
Don (fleet 51) stop by any time....
BTW, I had a funny phone call... The tires on the Belly Tank are old worn out trailer tires..... I don't trailer or store the car with the racing tires. 2,300 miles each direction to the salt, would result in flat spotting the tires.....

It is "Eight cylinders are for people who cant make horsepower".
Here's wishing Jimmy's total success.
All the best Neil. Better pack a bunch of lunches too. Warren doesn't stop for nothin when he is on a mission. When we were at your place if the truck hadn't needed fuel on the way home I would have died of starvation ;>)

Everything is back together but it was too late to start a start-up so it will have to wait until Wednesday night. Time is getting short. You can see by the photos that removing everything between the front of the engine and the back of the ****pit is quite a challenge but it is all back where it belongs.
Sorry, I don't know why the pictures went sideways.
Last night we reinstalled a water box that had a slight leak, with the engine at #1 TDC, installed the distributor and after a few false starts, the engine fired right up. It ran for 12 minutes and the water temperature got up to 110 degrees. We found one more pinhole leak that is easily fixed. The water may have to be brought up to temperature before a run but that 's what the early runs are for. The class record is 201 MPH by a car built of pure gold. Neil doesn't expect to be able to reach this guy's record but he still has the best looking vintage class project on the salt. We filmed the 12 minutes of first startup but for the life of me I can't upload the file to Flickr or Facebook even though I can watch it on my laptop. We'll continue to work on this and hopefully resolve the issue soon. And yes Don, it sounds awesome.
Warren
If anyone has any suggestions as to the upload, feel free to chime in. I'm running Windows 8.
Good. All the best and tell Neil rule # 8. "Never ever worry about the competition, past or present. Just make sure you do your best." rule #9 "Old age and wisdom beat youth and exuberance everytime!" (and even Neil is beginning to get a bit long in the tooth!;>) Low water temp at the start shouldn't bother the engine much since it is fuel injected and doesn't react the same way to a cold engine carb icing etc. I warm mine just long enuf to see the temp needle move then kill it till I run. Anyway all the best. It was awful quiet last night at Picton Cruise in. Several missed your smiling face. don

Saturday...today a few little things were cleaned up, the timing was set and the body was installed. Jim from ACE radiator in London dropped by to give us a hand. Unfortunately, I had to leave before the car was loaded into the trailer. Tomorrow every thing else gets loaded and we head out at 3:00 AM Monday morning. We meet Gary Weldon in Woodstock and then join with a couple of guys in Michigan. Hope to make Davenport Iowa by Monday night.
Have a great trip. If you see a Chrysler Power Mag anywhere on a mag stand in the US pick me up one if you will. Hope you have your hat(s). Don't forget your passport!

BTW be sure to say Hi to my friend Tim McMaster with the Y Block Ford pickup. I believe he and Neil know each other already. He also runs a Y block FED at the Eagle Field Drags which is similar to our Picton Airfield deal and often held on that same day for some unknown reason.

Got to Neil's about 10:00 Sunday night. We decided to leave then and drive to Woodstock. Arrived at the Onroute about 2:00 AM and caught about 5 hours sleep in the truck. Gary Weldon showed up with Bill Curtis, Bob Merkley and Colin. Headed off to the duty free and then on to Flint where we were joined by Bill and Mike. Along day of driving, switching drivers and mixing up the cars. Finally arrived at the Best Western in Davenport Iowa around 10:00 PM exhausted. Rained like hell at times today. Hope it is dry by the time we get to Bonneville. Will try to get to Lincoln Nebraska tomorrow.
Hope you get to a few Cracker Barrels! I like the Uncle Herschel Special myself!
A bit of news from home. The Lancaster Bomber from Hamilton was unable to leave for England because #2 engine would not start. They spent all morning and to 3 oclock trying to fix it. Must have had the new guy on it. Eventually they stuck it in the hangar and were going to work on it in the night. Apparently no spark on # 2.
Have a good trip.

Report as of 9:00 PM.....SCTA has announced that tech will take place starting Saturday morning at the airport and that racing will be a go Monday barring any unforeseen rain. But for now all is well in God's country again. Sorry, have had no wifi and have been driving late into the night so I will upload pictures in the morning. We have all day tomorrow off.
Glad you are there. We await your reports with baited breath. Dennys has WIFI always. You just ask the waitress for the customer password. Usually something like "Dennys rocks" Also any Walmart parking lot has very good WIFI.

I was just down to the entrance to the salt, water in some areas are almost to your knees . So I was talking with the owner of Moon Eyes, who parks at the end of the pits which are normally 3 to 4 mrs long, his trailer is in water, half way to his knees! I have no idea how anyone will be able to get onto the salt tomorrow, as the salt will become a huge slushie! To be continued......
We are on our way home. Kinda pissed, but making the best of it. Definitely will be back next year. My friend took about 800 pictures but we couldn't get them loaded. Lots of great cars hanging around the hotels. Soon as I get them, I will post them.
NEIL & WARREN : As DON said . no words to express the disappiontment -- I wish there was something we could say or do to help , other than " we are with you -- in spirit at least " -- See you when you get home -- LATER -- DON / fleet 51
