HEI pick up coil problems

I replaced points ignition with HEI on my 1971 Olds. Works fine but seems to blow the pick up coil after a short time of use. I use a thick keyed wire  from fuse box to ignition.

I can cure the symptons but not sure of the cause ??

GM had a problem with the lead wires  being too short and full vac advance would pull them off the windings. My experience.

Yes for sure do check with a vacuum pump or even just draw a vacuum on the advance and watch to see if the wires are broken on the plug that plugs on the module lots of them got cracked and the wires inside the insulation were broken from over flex.. other than that you have an issue with your voltage supply to the distributor ..I can see one  or two bad modules  but if you are constantly blowing them you have something else going on..I have seen a lot of bad modules on those try to find a delco one ..although that is no guarantee of quality anymore either they are all probably built in some Chinese slave hole and just reboxed by jobbers when they get to this side of the river..

check your cereal row they have them in a box of kellogs.. that was just a joke for those with a sense of humour confuse Thought I best clarify that on this board..no

3 main things

1) Wire too short, stretched or cracked

2 )Poor quality.

3) Irregular voltage to HEI

I got a voltmeter at idle it's 12 volts but at anything above it goes to 14 volts.

 it's got a voltage regulated alternator and a voltage regulator on the firewall that was rewired to work with self regulated alternator

I agree with what Chuk said about offshore GM modules in mid 80s had a miss in our race car could not find anything.so started throwing parts at it first was modules I had in spare parts.with no luck I thought to hell with it ordered a AC Delco module peeled back the holigram decal.lo and be hold made in tiawan.I think he meant post cereal bran flakes in case you have no sense of humour eat a box or two than go take a dump and clear your exhaust port

If you changed the pickup coil I think you can rule out one and two . I think the earlier units run a ballast resister on the firewall instead of a resistance coil  something to check. Ohm out all the wires even the ground while wiggling  them even the ground . Once had a minnie hei with a brake at the crimp on the negative would run fine but randomly just quite like someone reached over and shut off the key. Coil saturation , wait 1/2 an hour 

and it would fire back up. For the coil pickup though id say you have a constant high voltage . No resister .

What I know about ignition systems wouldn't fill a thimble , BUT , Is it possible that the culprit is as simple as not applying the conductive " grease " under the module --( I will learn from this one as well ) -- LATER -- DON / fleet 51

Leave out the paste and the module fry's won't affect the pickup coil. It insures good contact with the base that acts as a heat sink.
