I need help idintifying this engine

I require some help identifying this engine. The guy selling it, very knowledgable older gentleman, says it came out of a 1969 or 1970 camaro. here are the numbers i could get off of it;

from rear of engine 3970010 and D 16 5

from front passengervside pad, right side 426183 there were digits to the left of the 4 but couldn't read. left side of pad looks like V then a large rounded corner square, 4176 HB

i think D 16 5 is april 16 1975

3970010 as a 350 (that's what this engine is supposed to be) made between 1969 to 1980

I don't believe this could be the original engine in either year camaro he suggests

any help confirming this would be great before I put down money, i'm looking for a pre 1970 engine,

The suffix code HB says its one of these

HB1965327std trans., hi perf. 3004full size
HB1967327A.I.R. 2754full size/Camaro
HB1968327H.D. clutch 2754full size
HB1969350tur hydro trans. 3004A F X

2 letters (HB) is 1969 and earlier while 1970 and later would be 3 letters in the engine code.

Kinda odd the block #'s are somehow related to either standard or auto trans., depending on the year. confuse


You can tell I'm not a Chevy guy, when it comes to that.

Chrysler has the cast date on the block, which is typically about 2 months prior the build date of the car . Makes it easy.

 

Maybe throw a small block MOPAR in it, just to be on the safe side.biggrin

OK, here's more info now that I have the engine at home.
rear flange, 3970010 - 302, 327, 350 over a lot of years
D 16 5 - April, 16 1965
Front passenger side pad;
V04170HB: V - Flint, 0417 - April 17, 0 - ?, HB - (1965 - 1969)
15S426185: 1 - chev, 5 - 1965, S - St Louis (vettes & impalas), 426185 - serial number of car, 4xxxxx reserved for vettes.

I bought to engine anyway, but still would like to know what it really is.
Any ideas??

Can't be 1965,

3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro (rarer than hens teeth)
3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial (would have a T in the suffix code)
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4 bolt mains

I spent a good deal of time researching when I got my 3970010 block.

Can you post up a clear picture of the suffix stamp pad?

BLOCK CASTING DATE
The block casting date indicates when the block itself was cast in the foundry. This date does not indicate when the motor was assembled and then later placed into the vehicle at the factory. The block casting date is usually found on the rear ledge of the block on the passenger side, but some later model blocks have the casting date on the driver's side of the rear ledge. Some of the early big blocks made in the Sixties have the block casting date located on the passenger side of the block near the freeze plug holes. On these, if the early big block is in the car you will have to get under the motor to see the casting date. Do it while the car is on a lift. The casting dates look something like this "E 12 7". The "E" stands for the month of the year with "A" being the month of January, "B" being the month of February and so on thru the letters to December. In this case the "E" stands for the month of May, the fifth month of the year and the fifth letter of the alphabet. The "12" stands for the 12th day of the month. The "7" is the year of the decade. Now unfortunately this could be '57, '67, '77, '87 or '97 depending on which part you are looking at. Some casting dates have both the year of the decade and the decade itself. They look like this "E 12 77", meaning May 12, 1977. The fun starts when you have a casting date from the first nine days of the month that look like this "D 2 6". Does that stand for April 2,1966 or does it stand for April 26th and the year is missing or hard to see? You have to look closely and carefully to be sure.

if it's a 1965 it would be a small journal block,no ? i think the change to the large journal was in late 68 wasn't it ?

thanks guys. 58chev, that's the page I used. I will go out today and try to get some pics of the stamps. Its a puzzle. I even tried to find a suffix code OHB, in case that 0 was an O. I don't think it is but it was a shot in the dark. Oh ya, no OHB that I could find. Big car show in Stouffville today, so I won't get to this until later. They usually have over 1000 cars. But it was posponed from last weekend, so may not be as many. Its 5 minutes away so I'll go check it out.

A 010 block with that date code would be a 1975 model year. CHB in 1975 is an L48 350 from a camaro or vette. There is no other combo ending in HB for 1975 that I can find.

If it still has its original heads, they should be 882's.

Went out and examined a bit harder. The OHB turned out to be CHB. RacerRick wins the prize. It is indeed a 1975 350 from a vette from the factory with all of 165hp. But its been rebuilt and turned just over 350hp at the flywheel. Considering I was going to use a 64 or 66 283 in the suburban, this motor should be more fun.
When I was shopping around to have an older sbc rebuilt to @ 350hp a few shops were in the $5000 to $5800. I got a bargain.
Thanks to everyone who helped me try to solve this puzzle.
