While I was under the car today I thought some of you may find this neat

The vacuum canister is actually part of the frame

Also, thanks for stopping by today Bob T, always a pleasure to talk to you

Thank you, can't wait to get it cut and polished.

Not much to show pics of , just been detailing parts, ran all new vacuum lines

Dad did the upholstery on the dash ,so he could start putting it all together

Also started to put sound deadener on the floors

went over all the suspension ,checked that everything was torqued properly and installed a couple cotter pins I missed earlier

Dad's also been double checking all the wiring

Not too much to take pics of Bob, still doing lots of small items
Rebuilt the fuel/vacuum pump, cleaned up the tranny cooler and ran new lines to it.
Testing and cleaning window motors.
Got new water control (heater) valves and swapped them out to be safe.
Had the custom quarter window frames chromed and new side glass cut for the whole car, so the tint would match.
The car doesn't look much different in pics but lots of small items got crossed off the list
Have to cut and polish the car before we put any trim on it but want to wait until the car is closer to being finished .
Once we get the side glass back in ,we'll bolt all the convertible top components in.

Finally got this thing running today, purrs quite nicely
Smax came buy for the initial start up and got to have a nice visit with him too ,so it was a good day.
Just have to fix a small leak at the water pump.
I used a piece of 1" hose at the water pump connection because no one seems to have the 7/8" hose that Ford liked to use ,I'll have to find some I guess.

I may have a piece of 7/8 hose. Heater Hose correct? Not a molded piece? Our Dad loved auction sales and we bought a bunch of hose of a garage wall. All new never used.

I'll look for it if you'd like.

That would be awesome Rich, much appreciated and yes heater hose

Rubberline would order some in for us but we had to buy 200' and only need a 3" or 4" piece

I haven't been able to help Dad too much the last couple of weeks but we're making progress with getting the doors back together

we ned to get all the glass set so we can install the convertible top frame.

The quarter windows we had to custom make and have the frames chromed, then had to get glass cut for them.

Well the tint wasn't going to math the other glass ,so all new side glass was cut and fitted.

This helped slow things up a bit

Bench tested the window motors and 5 of the 6 were good, tested under load and found another needed rebuild.

Finally got the glass in

Here's a pic of Dad adjusting the quarter window

About time that we saw a update LOL. The car is going to look great and I like the quarter window shape. The car does look a little dusty though.

Went out to the garage and fired up the compressor tonight, the dust has now been removed lol

And we decided to tear the spare master cylinder and tredel-vac apart

the one on the car works but Dad decided to rebuilt the extra one and we'll rebuild it and swap them out

The top frame has been installed back on the car and final adjustments made to the glass

image.jpg

Here's a shot of the top brackets installed

image.jpg

And another engine shot

The rad will be replaced later, this one was good enough to get the car running

Also have another set of valve covers that have been bead blasted and the ribs polished, they will be swapped out after the engine is broken in

Actually been getting other parts ready to bolt on, like the bumpers

which were already rechromed when Dad bought the car

image.jpg

Just polished the rear bumper and added the exhaust diffusers that were missing, the exhaust exits through the bumper

image.jpg

Polished the front bumper as well and had the bumperettes rechromed, also installed new turn signal lenses

apparently the bumperettes were only on cars that required a front license plate, so not all cars have them

The hubcaps were another special treat, Dad only got 2 with the car but found a "deal" for 2 more at $350 each

image.jpg

Here's one cleaned up, the background behind the ribs had to be  repainted black, which meant removing the 40 ribs x4 hub caps and polishing every rib before reassembly

image.jpg

There's a set of these caps on eBay right now , they want $2000 U.S. For them

bloody ridiculous for a set of caps

This one sold last weekend at the RM Auction, must be a new record for one, other than maybe the one Elvis or Elizabeth Taylor owned. $247,500

Got the rechromed grille installed, but will probably pull it back out and paint inside all the little squares, as they're supposed to be painted silver in the middle

image.jpg

The original carpets for this car were a special ordered fur, but we went with the "standard" Wilton wool carpets

and here's a picture of us trying to sort out all the carpet pieces

Thank you, I've been working on cars with my Dad off and on since I was about 13 years old, I'm now 48

i just wish that my 2 sons were more interested in building cars.

Hopefully someday soon, as a 3 generation build would be awesome

We found out about another issue with these cars,
If you want to run radial tires, they will rub on the upper ball joints you also increase the odds of losing the hub caps and with the cost of the caps Dad doesn't want to lose any.
So new rims with more offset were ordered, the new rims are also heavier gauge steel so they won't flex as much and lessen the chance of losing hub caps, new Diamond back wide whitewalls have also been ordered

Glad you found this thread Andrew, I don't think I've seen you since I started it.

I'll try to stop by your shop in the next week or two.

You should stop by the house and check out the progress.

it's running well and the brakes are bled, so I guess we could actually drive it now, lol

I'm back to work at a metal shop and finally got those new rocker panel pieces made .

In the last month or so, we pulled the hood and trunk lid off and had the hinges rebuilt , should have just rebuilt them from the beginning ,new rims and tires are on and the the water pump was leaking ,we found it had a small crack in the casting and had to source a rebuilt one.
Can't wait to finally see some seats in it

My Dad was out in my shop with us last weekend working on my wagon.  Three Generations in the shop that day!  It is a great feeling.  We probably only talked for about 30minutes out of the 4 or 5hrs he was here but I know my Dad went home happy.   It's a guy thing!

Really enjoy your Thread.

That's a great looking build. You have to cherish those Father & Son times as the memories will never leave you. I lost my dad in 2013 and miss him every day. He wasn't a car guy he was a fisherman and the memories of all those fishing trips with him are priceless. Enjoy your times together and again, Great Build.

I've taken a special interest in this build because we just took one in for a customer. We'll be doing the body work and paint over the winter, and the owner will be reassembling the car. He has taken it all apart with great care and lots of documentation. I'll make sure the guys in the shop get to see this thread and the notify the owner as well so he can get a look. Beautiful work.

Thanks Sniper, you and the owner have got your work cut out for ya, Dad and I have built quite a few cars and this thing is a challenge. Partly because of the convertible conversion. We have a parts car so if you need anything I might be able to help.

That's good to know, I'll pass that on to the owner. This gentleman/customer has two, both in black, the one he's dismantled and the second one that is still altogether. When you get into one of these, we found a few oddities as you likely have. The two piece headlight area of the fender, I'm guessing the shape of the fender with the aggressive bends and compound curves were to much to stamp out in one piece. Routing of the exhaust down through the inner wheel well, into the front corner of the frame and along the frame rail and rocker panel.  Weight of the front fenders must equal 2 or 3 Smart cars. These things were built like a tank. It will be interesting alright. I'll be watching the rest of your build and gleaning it for info, kind of nice to see what's there before hand. Thanks, take care.
