Towing with a old truck
Permalink

Poncho an Hot Rod Steve , both mentioned in my other truck post , about towing with their 50,s style pick ups . here,s my scenario . my 50 chebby truck is 1770 kilo,s with me in it which is like 3890 lbs , minus me 240 ish , makes truck 3650 lbs . I wanted to tow my 72 gremlin drag car with it , but am wondering about the weights .

ie , truck is 3600 lbs  vs trailer 1800 an car 2600 which is 4400 lbs which is 800 lbs heavier then the truck itself

my tow vehicle 01 grand cherokke e is 4466 lbs with a weight rating of 10, 000 lbs . So I clear by at least a 1000 lbs .

but the 50 is nearly 1000 lbs lighter then the jeep

how much do your trucks weigh , and do you know how much you can legally carry tow with them ..77.

I believe my truck weighed about 3600 lbs....The most I towed with it was my 19ft Prowler travel trailer which was about 3500 lbs loaded. So truck and trailer were just about equal weight. Of course, it had trailer brakes, which you will need. My truck had a Camaro clip and similar rear end, so it had front disks and rear drums that a 76 Camaro would have. I think you shouldnt have too much trouble towing with your truck as long as your brake setup is good.

I now tow a 6000 lb 5th wheel with my 97 GMC K1500....I suppose the trailer weighs a bit more than the truck. I got a new brake controller this year, a Prodigy P3 proportional controller....It is real slick, takes all the jerkiness out that you usually get with the timed brake controllers

You can tow if you are under the 10'000 lb total. I used to know what it was in KG but it has been too long. Trailer brakes are a must. I prefer surge brakes because they never mess up and I don't have to run wires and can use them on any vehicle. If your truck has the suds to tow your Gremlin on the trailer then fine. I had always wanted to build a Jeep tractor hauling a race car trailer fifth wheel style but I see too many birthdays have slipped by so I will forget that. BTW In my misspent youth I was a partner in the D&C Performance K/S Rambler American. 290 four barrel four speed car. We ran at Cayuga, St T and Quinte (Mohawk in its last days under NHRA) Might even have a photo somewhere. 360 AMC is my favourite. Seems to give back the most on a build for the $s spent.

my trailer has elect brakes tandem axles . a doly could work but I just don,t like them .
maybe time to splurge an get an aloominium trailer . a lot less weight .I think it would be cool to be able to tow my 1972 drag car or my 1959 gasser with my 50 chebby truck ..77.

A weight distribution hitch would help as well. When I towed with my '68 gmc the coils in the back were a little weak so the hitch helps put a little more weight on the front axle and keep the bumper from dragging.

Re towing-my 55 Chev truck has disc brakes on the front and a later 6 bolt rear end. It also has a 350 with turbo 400. I think it weighs about 3800lb. The trailer is 1600lb with electric brakes. The 39 Ford is about 3200lb. I was hesitant to try it at first, but it seems to do just fine. I would not try this with a truck any smaller than the 55.

now thats what I,m talking about . I,ll be as cool as John Milner , but in reality ... I,m a bit more like Beckwith though . ha ha .

And Thank You to the guys that provided axeual towing eggsperiences with older trucks .

I all ready have a class 4 draw tite adjustable hitch , ( the end or side plates bolt on to match different frames an mount locations ) to put on it next spring . Then eggsperiment , an see how it handles the loads . It,s a regular box , not a short box model ..77.

You definitely want a tandem axle trailer, cuz a single axle will transfer too much weight when braking or accelerating.
