In a pinch, I have taken a bolt and ground a groove lengthwise on each side.....works good for cleaning out crap like that.

Regular tap will cut metal out of the threaded hole.

After seeing Harry's post, I remembered a post in the links section.

On that I had posted up a while back.

If a standard tap removes material, it's either because it's a different class fit, or the threads have been compromised (stretched).

For a cylinder head, I suggest you use a 3B class fit.
If you want to clean the threads out with the bolt and ground threads, use a cap screw, they are a 3B class fit.

In a blind hole, a spiral flute tap works best, as it pulls the material to the top. A standard straight flute tap, or the bolt idea will push dirt/crap in.
