Ian Hamilton?

Off topic, but we spent 2 weeks at Shawnigan Lake last month. We were also there in the spring of 13 for 10 days.

Jarvis 1, we were in Cowichan Bay several times. Also ate at the Cobblestone Inn, Black Swan, and a little cheese house in Cowichan Bay. My wife's cousin was playing guitar and singing there on Oct. 11. I took a picture of a late 40's black Ford pickup last year as he was leaving Cowichan Bay. I will see if i can find it, I am sure you would know it.

When I had my towing company, on the Trans Canada Highway 17, north of Lake Superior, I got a call from a guy, who was rather shook up, about towing his car. I went met with him at site. He really was not sure what had happened, but there was Moose hairs in the trim along the top of the windshield and windshield was broken, The car was a Mazda RX-7. He had run UNDER a Moose and almost got away damage free. He had NOT hit the legs, just the bottom of the rib cage. He had no idea of what he had hit, being a resident of Toronto and not born in Canada (Japan). He had no idea what a Moose was.

Completely unrelated to this, but an interesting coincidence, I purchased an engine from a Guy in Windsor that was using T shirts from Batchawana Bay Trading Post as shop rags.  He had plenty. Unusual because that Trading Post was located on The same Hwy 17, north of Lake Superior, about 30 miles North of Sault Ste Marie, quite a hike from Windsor, no matter which route you take. Turns out his sister & brother-in-law had owned the Trading Post for several years and shut it down because of reduced tourism in Ontario (price of gasoline).  For years American tourists have been entering Canada, after the first fill up of gas They turn around and go back to U.S. $ per Litre means nothing, price per tank is shocking.

Make your own comment here.

In 1967 I was working north of Vanderhoof, B.C., and it was not unusual to see Moose on the road between Fort St.James and Pinchi Lake. Found out that you can chase them down the road, but don't tire them out, or get them pissed, cuz they'll turn and chase you, and do some serious damage in a hurry.

my father worked as a traveling salesman most of his life

he once told me the story of a fellow he worked with who was driveing up in northern ontario
he stoped at a stop sign one night

from one side of the road came a bull moose outta the bush
it simply walked up to his stoped car - a sedan delivery or panel truck and fliped it on it's side
then casually walked into the bush on the opposite side of the road

so I guess "don't make 'em go around" is another thing to add to the do not do with moose list

One of the craziest moose collisions i have seen: Guy is driving his 90's chev truck going home. Hits a large cow moose, moose goes up over the hood , takes out the windshield, then lands UP ON TOP of the truck cap. Couple of legs hangin off, but she's fully on top of the truck cap. Cops come, and after all the investigation, they ALLOWED the guy to drive the truck home , which was 35 miles to go, on a secondary hiway. WITH the moose still on top of the truck cap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good one squatch. nothing surprises me with what could happen up there in the day. years ago over in temiskaming guys use drive around town all the time with big bull heads and racks strapped to the hoods of their trucks. at the end of the season there was a big party in the arena with all the heads on display with prizes for various things. i use to just shake my head thinking you wouldn't want to pull that down our way.

-i wonder if that still goes on? i can't see it happening but tradition is sometimes hard to relegate.

Several years ago our nephew was a passenger in a micro car on a back road near Cochrane Alberta. As they crested a hill there was a cow and bull in the middle of the road. The bull ran off but they hit the cow flipping it onto the roof. Our nephew had stiffened in the seat pushing himself backwards. The roof collapsed and pinned his head between the roof and the top of the seat. The driver was fine, tried to call for help but had no cell service. After about 10 minutes another car came along. He rushed down the road and found a home with a land line. The police and paramedics arrived but could not free him. They called for the jaws of life and a medi copter came out from Calgary. They freed him and he spent several days in the hospital with 3 cracked vertebra. He recovered but still has back pain. He now lives in Grande Prairie Alberta but is very careful when driving anywhere out of town.

Around 2005 I  was headed up 17 toward North bay Just past dusk , booking it . I noticed a strange orange type marker light facing me but on the opposite shoulder so I let off the gas. Then the road turned red and a large brown lump was taking up most of the road so I swung for the shoulder no sooner then I  did that A pair of white eyes  appeared dead centre of the hood. so I swung back into the blood and the guts . I can still see the expression on buddies  face . The marker was what was left of the front of a van and the driver wearing black standing on the opposite side of the road. Good  thing it happened fast or I would of craped myself.
