My 70 Chevelle had that....I believe from 68-72 should all be about the same.....nobody ever used the headliner belt....and rarely the lap belt either....lol
Thanks for the replies guys. The belts are for my son's car, even Early Birds says they are not reproduced by anyone because they are one year only. Classic Ind. and other suppliers sell a
replacement but it just a regular 3 point harness. He wants the original "race only style".
There was a set on e-bay, but they disappeared somehow, may be they will reappear.
Gee Wayne, I thought GM was the only one that would do that in a car!
Our son only wears the lap belt, he has been stopped 3 different times for other
things, but never given a ticket for not wearing the shoulder part. I guess the cops
couldn't bend low enough to see the strap on the headliner!
The legal requirement to wear (or use) the shoulder belt (and not just the lap belt) depends on the year of the car.
I had a '71 340 Duster with the same set up. Lap belt with a completely separate belt for the shoulder/chest that was stored up, out of the way, above the door window, and held there with clips. I was not required to wear the shoulder belt in my '71. Don't know what year is the cut-off though. I only looked into this (years ago) when I owned my Duster.
That's interesting Gord! He plays baseball with a bunch of cops, I will suggest that he ask them. Thanks!
Hmmm, I don't think you'll need to ask after all. I owned my car in the mid 80's and that was the law back then (I was not required to wear the shoulder harness due to the cars year of manufacture). I just googled the current law and it seems they have changed it since it applied to me. Here are some highlights directly from the highway traffic act:
The short title of this Act is the Highway Traffic Amendment Act (Seat Belts), 2006.
(2) Every person who drives on a highway a motor vehicle in which a seat belt assembly is provided for the driver shall wear the COMPLETE seat belt assembly as required by subsection (5).
(5) A seat belt assembly shall be worn so that,
(a) the pelvic restraint is worn firmly against the body and across the hips;
(b) the torso restraint, if there is one, is worn closely against the body and over the shoulder and across the chest;
(c) the pelvic restraint, and the torso restraint, if there is one, are securely fastened; and
(d) no more than one person is wearing the seat belt assembly at any one time.
Me again. I can understand why they changed the law as it makes little sense to equip a car with both lap and shoulder belts, but then only require the lap belt to be worn (I know for a fact this was not the case in the past though). This version of the HTA is from 2006, so I'm sure the gov't and the insurance companies had a hand in "amending" the law to require shoulder harness's, if so equipped.

I know the saying "ignorance of the law is no excuse" but if I bought another car with those belts, I'd just assume the laws hadn't changed and it was ok to drive with just the lap belt. I'd bet most of the cops out there are too young to realize there actually are separate belts in some (older) cars or they don't realize that people are now required to wear both. I'd never have known if I didn't look it up because of this post.
