Looking to go to a 5 speed standard in my 64 Elcamino ,have a chance to get all the parts -fly wheel bell housing and trans , any body know if a 4.3 from a 95 s10 5 speed bell housing will bolt to a 64 ,283 ?
Will the 4.3 fly wheel fit ?
If not, what fly wheel and starter will fit ?
Can the speedo be changed from electronic to cable ?
Find a 5 spd from a 3rd gen Camaro or a 2wd S10 with the 4.3. Not the strongest 5 spd., but it'll do if you dont get crazy with the skinny pedal. Both will be hydraulic clutches, but you'll be able to convert it over with the right bellhousing.
I have a camaro t5 box with a s10 tailpiece in my 55 gmc and its bolted up to a 64 gmc bellhousing which originally had a 283 for a motor. i used all my stock clutch linkage. the only issue was the bolts from the tranny to the bell were metric and had to be open a wee bit. that being said there are a couple of different t5 configurations out there. the reason for the s10 tail piece was for the mechanical speedo and to locate the shifter forward to clear my bench seat. i'm replacing the tranny soon and the guy who bought it is putting it in a 65 el camino. the t5 is a light duty tranny and i tow a 28 ft camper so its being replaced with a nv4500

The 4.3 used a small block bolt pattern but the flywheel will be different changed after 86 because of the one peice rear main seal. The 4.3 used a NV3500 with integral bell not a t5 . found this on the Hamb
Bolts up to a SBC, needs a 168 tooth flywheel and a clutch kit from a "1998 C1500 2WD 4.3L" if it has a hydraulic throwout.... Earlier versions had a Slave Cylinder, and you can run the clutch and flywheel from a "1988 C1500 2WD 4.3L
should of added the 168 flywheel will need to be pre 86 or for a 2 piece main seal...

heres some pics from last year to give you some ideas. i had replaced the t5 with a super t10 till it puked its rear seal. this is the 64 bell with my stock linkage. i only changes out the friction disc (different spline count) oh ya the yoke too.
The 4.3 flywheel will not fit your engine. The 4.3 bellhousing will fit your engine (assuming the early V8 Chevs use the same block-trans pattern as later SBC's ... earliest SBC I've had has been a '67). You will most likely need a "small" 153 tooth early crank pattern, SBC flywheel (and matching starter). I say "most likely" because I don't know for sure that the SBC "small" flywheel will actually fit inside the bellhousing of a 95 S10 trans, as I don't know what size clutch the S10 used. the "small" 153 tooth fits a 10.5 clutch. Converting from electronic to mechanical speedo ... I kinda think I read about some conversion thingy out there on the market, but I have no idea what it would cost. If the trans is a T5, you should be able to replace the bellhousing with an early one, if it's not a T5 and has an integral bellhousing, and the 153 tooth flywheel doesn't fit inside the S10 bellhousing ... well, I don't have an answer for that.
Just curious ... how much is the S10 trans, clutch, flywheel costing you?
The "hot ticket" nowadays is to use a V8 sourced T5 (Camaro/Firebird) with the tailshaft housing replaced with one from an S10 with the mechanical speedo drive. The S10 tailshaft housing "un-tilts" the Camaro/Firebird T5, while moving the shifter forward (important if you are using a bench seat), allows the use of a "regular", pre-86 bellhousing of your choice (which means you can use the mechanical clutch pedal stuff that your Elco would have come with if it had a std trans from the factory, all of which should be available through the aftermarket), and allows the use of a regular clutch kit, and allows you to retain the cable driven speedo.

Here's a pic of the T5 and bell in my 29 roadster. The bell is a run of the mill aluminum that had blanks on the right side for the clutch release arm so I moved the release arm and clutch slave cylinder to the right side to free up room on the left side. It is a Camaro box with a s-10 tailstock and it uses a 153 tooth flywheel
Thank you for the quick replies .
I can can get a cheap {$200.00} rusty crusty S10 with a good Trans. and frame .
Looks like there will be more parts going in the shed.
John.
