anyone know of a good octane boost that's available locally [ peterborough area ] ? i had been contemplating using toluene. 11-1 cr with iron heads. it runs on 94 but i would like a little insurance if the fuel quality deteriorates.

call John Shelbourne - he is a retired fuel chemist and makes some amazing additives as a retirement business - we have had seriously good luck with his stuff, and anyoneelse who has tried it never switches out.
it isn't cheap but is cheaper than actual race fuel
you tell him what you have and how you drive it - he will mix it accordingly - you just add to 5 gallons of regular gas
For a number of years manufacturers have installed knock detectors in engines and wired them to retard timing when detonation and pre-ignition have occurred. The human ear will only detect either when things have reached a serious condition, aka death rattle.
Wanna know if you need octane boost, go to drag strip with your normal fuel of choice. Make several passes. Record E.T. and MPH and what gas.
Pour in the instructed amount of ETHANOL NEUTRALIZER, make 3 passes and record.
Add instructed amount of octane booster make 3 passes and record.
DRAIN remainder of fuel tank until empty (or as close as you can get it). Pour in 2 gallons of Racing gasoline (105-115 etc), NOT AV GAS! make 3 passes and record.
If at any time If the tires begin to spin everytime as you change the gas/octane booster you just got your answer.
Your answer to the question of octane booster will be in at what point there was no noticeable difference in your E.T. & MPH. The answer is the level BEFORE there was NO Change. You might see small variations in the 3 passes at each change, but overall once you have adequate octane the times will remain consistent.
Too complicated? Too much work? Just run current combination until failure, pull engine down and inspect pistons for burned edges, slag in rings, hole in pistons, or many little pock marks on top of piston. Any or all of these will indicate your engine requires more octane, no matter what brand of gas you are running. but, I guess it's too late then.
By the way, IF you can find one of the dyno style emissions testers you can have your car tested to see if it runs lean or rich, or correct while running. I have NOT heard of anyone getting a computer program to convert an emissions dyno to a Horsepower dyno, but perhaps someone has.
