There is an article in the national post , thursday feb 19 .. Judge nixes 'outrages' sale by ALzheimers patient.
Ok,, I understand taking advantage of someone is a bad thing,, no doubt about it! .. but this article goes on to say the neighbor bought a 1931 ford model A truck ,, restored by the late husband.. been in the family for decades... for $2000 dollars,,, he got it appraised at $8000,, the daughter of the owner got it appraised at $17000 ,,,, so the judge ruled it was sold for WAY too little,, and overturned the sale.
Ok,, not toooo long ago.. I stumbled on a vintage trailer. I figure it is worth $4500... I thought I'd like to buy it for $1500. or pass... I knocked on the door.. and asked the Lady if it was for sale.. she said YES! ... ok,, how much?? and she indicated she would not sell it till she got her sons permission.
2 weeks later ,, son's permission granted,,, i ask again,,, How much? and she says $100 !!!! ... I was soooo stunned.. I blurted out..... OMG, I'd pay $200 for it... and she accepted immediately ! I have NEVER upped a price before.. lol.. vendor gets what he asks.. or I offer lower.... lol
but, did I rip her off... ??? I say NOT.................. but with the "facts" on the table.... I paid outrageously low price for what I valued it at.
I just think there is sooooo many things that enter into this story... that we will never hear about the truth... but I have been in a frame of mind before where I screamed at a POS that I was tired of.. and said.. something stupid like ,,, first hundred bucks and take this thing away.... and BOOM,, sale was done.
could I get a judge to say I was INSANE at that moment.. and I should get my toy back..??
WOW.. people live on looking for things at garage sales...getting a picaso for $5.. and selling it for a million......... do we have to give the person we bought it from the heads up....
I buy and sell stuff all the time... buy low.. sell high! .... well I don't always get to sell high.. but when I do.. could I be accused of taking advantage of someone???
I sell stuff all the time,, that i find out later the guy resold it for double.... and I say,, oh well.. I got what I asked.. he was the one who knew a buyer with dollars... and he made the sale..
I can go on an on with what I think is the exact same thing............. buying Water while visiting a glacier... $3.50 a bottle ... of water right out of the well right there! did I get ripped off? YES i did.. but i was a tourist.. and gouging tourists is ok in this capitalistic world isn't it?
Jeeeeze...... wasn't it wal-mart that said...... HONEY! get the car running! ....get the H out of here before they realize the deal was too good to be true!
if you google judge nixes outrageous sale national post tom blackwell ,, there is the article... but I think you have to have an acct to sign in to read it online
meester jamie -- If , when you " buy low and sell high " , would that be taking advantage of someone ??? Ever hear of car dealerships ?? --- ( Good topic !! ) -- LATER -- DON / Fleet 51
I just got back from Vegas....Talk about gouging.....
Years ago, I bought a 68 Beaumont for $50....drove it for 3 years and sold it for $75....That was pretty normal in the 70s, winter beaters were $50-$200,,,,never much more than that. If course, we were only bringing home a couple of hundred a week
I guess if you can sleep well at night knowing you took advantage of a Widow, then you could say you got a good deal.
Karma will even things out one day.
Ive fell into a lot of good deals over the years and most were people that just wanted whatever gone and didn't want to haggle or put any effort into it .Taking advantage of someone that is mentally challenged falls into the upper level goof..... BFG.....Just the fact that it went to court is proof that buddy is a giant waste of good air.
I bought a 1987 Buick Grand National for $500.00 as is last fall. Frame is mint,a hole the size of a quarter in the floor,runs,103 K on it,with title. Mind you it needs body and paint plus a windshield as well as redo the interior from being trashed. Still it is well worth the 500.

A few years ago, I advertised on FreeCycle that I was looking for scrap garden tractors for parts etc...Guy from Brantford called and said he had an old Ford tractor. I got down there and he said the steering had broke and he ended up in the ditch. Scared the crap out of him and he just wanted it out of there. I gave him $50 for it. Great tractor once steering was fixed, mower, blade and rototiller attachments......
Passing an sold empty house the guy was cutting his grass with a 425 John Deere liquid cooled. Asked him if the tractor was sold with the house and he said the fellow never put it in the offer. Said Evergreen offered him $1,200. to cover the cost of the new deck he put on it and I could have it for that saving him the delivery. He also through in the old deck in with it that was good. I picked it up after he finished cutting the grass.

in 1980, I saw an ad in paper, 1972 ford custom 500, new tires, comes with snows, low miles, 8 track player, with amp and FM adapter. all maintenance done regularly by fleet mech. $50
<insert stunned look on baby face here> lol
I figured it was a misprint, but worth a call...
Hello? do you have a ford for sale?,,
YES! AND THE PRICE _IS_$50 LIKE THE AD READS!
ohhh kay,,, he rants a bit more that the car is exactly as advertised ...
so I said it runs? consider it sold.... it.ll take me 45 min to get there , with cash!
he had taken dozens of call chewing him out,, no way a perfect cond car can be $50!
well it was his way of getting it gone as he owned 4 corvettes and his company had just bought him a car.
it ran in 5 demolition derby,s and made me money!.... it was the best car I should never have wrecked,,, but the price made me do it .. lol
I guess if you can sleep well at night knowing you took advantage of a Widow, then you could say you got a good deal. Karma will even things out one day.
sigh... you know, the Alzheimer patient doesn't even care,,, it was the daughter that was loosing out on the deal,, but really,,, some deals are too good to be true... some are blatant scam, taking advantage, greed,,
I know a couple people who got their house[s] cheap, the old guy didn't want the effort to sell, and didn't want the lazy ass kids getting the money,, so he basically gave it to the neighbor cause he cut his grass and cleared the snow for a few years
on an on ,,, this guy helped out the 'widow' a little, then got a REALLY good deal... judge says nope!
Nigerian scams the catfish for 1,450.136.24 .... fbi says,, hmm, yah not much we can do for you lady.. go see Dr Phil
In 1988 we were looking for a 428CJ engine for our son's 70 Mustang. 1948 Ford with a 428 advertised in Belle River (near Windsor). Went to check it out only to find that it's a 7liter engine. He sold us the whole car for $800. Got it home and found a set of 390GT heads Ford top loader, c/w hurst comp plus shifter, 9" nodular rear end, and a bunch of electrical stuff included.OH, YAA
Forgot that this also came in the deal. 390/406 Ford tri-carb set up, complete with intake, carbs, fuel log - everything except the linkage.

It all boils down to living with yourself. If you are satisfied that all involved in the deal are aware of the value and a low price is agreed on fine . Otherwise karma will ketch up to you someday ,not sure how it works but it can be positive or negitive. Ed
