Exporting a car to U.S. - ???

Posting for a friend.  --  Looking for information, recommendations, experiences, suggestions, etc. on selling a vehicle into the U.S.  I know there are carriers that will pick up and deliver, but will they do ALL the paper work that is required for the border?  Maybe he should use a separate broker for ALL the paper work.  Never been involved with vehicles going South.

Any information would appreciated.

Thanking you in advance

John

It should be up to the buyer to do the paper work.

I just sold a car to a gentleman from Fla, he came to pick it up...we went to MTO with a bill of sale, they issued a 10 day temporary permit that he stuck on windshield, I removed my plates... He just had to show his passport and a proof of insurance...
Apparently Canada Customs gave him a little hard time as he didn't have a plate but a temporary permit...that's it, drove all the way down to Fla, that was a month ago... pretty straightforward...

No problems shipping to the U.S. , it's easier for them to import .
Like said above, if the new owner takes it to the border himself, he just declares it.
If he's going to ship it, the shipping company will help with brokerage or he can arrange his own broker.
I've shipped cars into the U.S, the best so far was Reliable Carriers, they have yards all over the states but their main yard is In Michigan. They come to Canada often and will help with all paperwork

Johnnee D,
I think you meant to say US customs didn't you??? Going into the states you only pay a toll at the Canadian side and you're gone.

the big thing is the language ,, is the US buyer importing the vehicle,, which is different than the CDN seller exporting the vehicle to USA ... any way,, here is a couple links to help

www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/importing-car

www.epa.gov/otaq/imports/

as for recommendations, experiences, suggestions,.. I can't help.. sorry.

I tried to export an engine to USA recently,, and it was almost IMPOSSIBLE......all the brokers said,,NO.. and gave me another co. to call.. repeat! ....

I ended up setting up a pony express rte of people ,, one guy picked it up here.. took it to TN,, where another took it to AZ,, and another took it to CA ...

The buyer was a US Military,,out of the country at the time ... he really should have set up the deal.. as a US citizen,, and being military.. he could have done the clearance with ease. but there was soo many in the club who wanted to help out a VET ... it went the other way

Wonder why Canada Customs would even notice - you don't even stop on the way out of Canada

Yeh, but that doesn't work for the buyer. A friend sold a car to a guy in Florida and he drove it home from Detroit. US Customs made him bring it all the way back and take it across legally.Bad advice

i have sold several cars that went to the usa, very easy, hassle free, if you follow simple instructions

1. drive or trailer vehicle across bridge into us customs at queenston bridge

2. explain to us customs you are selling the vehicle and you are meeting the buyer in the customs office in the building to the right of you

3. they will take your drivers licence and hand you a slip of paper for you to report to the customs office

4. exchange money in the parking lot and bill of sale

5. both of you go into us customs office and the new owner will do all the talking

6. request the necessary documentation to import a vehicle into the usa and fill it out

7. the us customs officer will want to see the vehicle and identify/confirm the vin number

8. go back inside, sign a declaration that you have sold the car and now the property of the us

9. make sure you get your drivers licence back and passport

-there is no fee or charge at customs to do this for the seller or new owner

-any taxes owed will be paid by the new owner to the state in which they live, when they get back home and change over the ownership/title

-without the documentation from us customs, the new owner will have to jump through hoops and possibly have to return with the vehicle to the border in which the vehicle crossed at or deny registration

- do not meet at mall or somewhere near border  to carry out the transaction and sale of vehicle, it will come back to haunt you

-only do it at u s customs in the building, where the trucks get their loads authorized

Could be a few reasons . They like to see a plate so they know who you are before you are close to the booth . The last 6 or 7 years a temp plate has just been a sticker with T on it that go's were your renewal sticker go's on the plate. maybe they still issue the older style for out of province sales as the plate will be no good ? Made the border cop think. Never a good plan .
