Hey ya'll

I got a lead on a barn find.

1956 Oldsmobile 88 4 dr automatic with 62000

I know its got 2 extra doors on it, but seriously.  the outside looks almost mint..

haven't been to look but guy tells me it turns over, switches gears and has breaks.

hadn't ran for 5 yrs. stored in barn 30.  was his grandfathers...original owner.

I talked him down to 1500.

Im just looking for something to drive this year to take my little girl to cruise nights

Do you think its worth it?

If you can get it running, and it moves under its own power, not all rotted out under body/frame, and interior isn't a rats nest, then definitely.

I see you posted some pics while I was answering. That should be a 324 cuin engine. Lots of torque, but not much in the rpm dept.

Parts are a little difficult!!! That's got a 324 V8 & a 4 spd Hydromatic trans. Looks like it's correct from picture??? There are a few olds. Specialty outlets for parts.

What do you get for $1500 these days? Buy it get it running, clean it, hubcap it and have a ball!! I know it wont be that easy, but it sure would be nice!!! Good luck! If you buy it your girls will never forget dads "big old boat" he had back in 2015. HRD

Buy it ,don't tear it apart, get it running and safe . Enjoy it as is and restore it next winter. Biggest mistake people make is to make a huge project out of something befor they have a chance to enjoy it. Ed

Yikes .... believe me, projects like this ALWAYS cost more than you expect they will, even if the intent is just to "make it safe and drive it" ... the expense will be in the form of wheel cylinders, drums and shoes, oil and filter, gaskets, ball joints, U-joints, tires, rad recore, leaky gas tank, worn out steering box, noisy rear gears, exhaust issues, wiring issues, fuel and brake lines, parking brake cables, cracked windshield, carb rebuilt, safety certificate, sales tax, licence plates/sticker, insurance etc etc etc (this is not taking into account any body/floor or interior issues) etc etc etc.

All I'm suggesting is that if, at this point in time, you honestly gotta figure out where the initial $1500 is coming from .... maybe it just isn't the right time for something like this for you and your family.  If this was your absolute "dream car" ..... I'd say, go for it, stash it somewhere and chip away as time and dollars allow ... if this ISN'T the car you've "always wanted", I think it might be wise to steer clear of it.  These things have a way of sucking up the bucks (again, no matter how cheaply you think you can get it back in the road) and being a four door, it might not be an easy thing to move (sell) if the need arises.  I totally agree with the idea that you forgo a complete resto (repaint, fresh interior, new driveline etc) and just get it back up and driving, but it WILL definitely cost you more than what you think it will ... it always does.

Just something to think about ....

Wow! That's exactly what I was thinking! A big bitchin' desk from the front and a large comfy couch from the rear!

I'll buy that dash off you - it would look great in an early hot rod! Love it!!!

thx Pint & Pound for the advice. I know its not gonna be turn key and go...but i'll try to get it driving as cheaply and safely as possible for this year, and then start doing the tune ups and things as I go. Im also buying it to be my first, and a learning experience for both me and my lil girl.
he assures me that there is very little rust under it. so I hope he knows what hes talking about...

I was wondering if any of you fine folks would be interested in accompanying me to go check it out, and maybe if you have a trailer to haul it back up my way? I can throw you a few bucks, a case of beer, or owe you a favour the next time you need something built (im a home builder)...or if you have some chores around the yard/house that your avoiding..cleaning gutters...hauling scrap....whatever you need! A favour for a favour.....I like the barter system...

Again, thx guys for all the advice and help. I really do appreciate and value your opinion and experience...
Cheers!

SO update on the Rocket 88... There has been a bit of back and forth as his family was unsure if they wanted to give up the car or not....but the kid talks them into selling it to me. So as im making final plans to go get the car this weekend, he emails me tonite and tells me that APPARENTLY someone forgot to take the FOR SALE sign out of the window, and someone came by and offered them the 2500 for it on the spot. The kid says that the "real executor of estate" says that it wasn't his decision to make, and tough....
I am so unbelievably disappointed and pissed off I just wanna smash something!! I was so close to having my first classic car and finally living out a dream I've had since as far back as I can remember....but now I am back to square one....with nothing...
So if anyone here knows the guy who bought the 88....let em know what really happened...and tell him to REALLY enjoy it as me and my family would of...........................................

If you only had a 'verbal" agreement & no deposit, then it's 'ain't worth the paper it's written on" Whenever I go to look at a car, the trailer is with me & cash in the pocket!!! Shows the seller your a "BUYER" & you can drive away, either with the car, or empty!!!!!! Also doesn't give them the time waiting for you to come back to change their mind.

Thx guys. I asked if I needed a deposit and it wasnt an issue...I am a man of my word. But I know not everyone is..and I've been burnt before...but I don't think I'll ever stop believing that a mans word is worth something..
Onward and upward I suppose. I'll just keep living vicariously thru all your builds and rides! :)

I've got a hunch the family put their foot down and refused the sale, not that someone else swooped in and snagged it.  If the old guy was the original owner and he kept the car all these years, I'll bet the older family members just didn't feel right selling it.

The family to the kid ... "We're not ready to sell it, since no deposit was taken, just tell him someone else paid the full amount and it's gone".

Now I just gotta figure out how to get 1500 and hide it from the wife......

If I may point this out as well for the next one you find (I really hope there is an even better deal waiting out there for you)

She will notice.... a big....blue.....4 door. When she questions you about  the car, ask her to show you the receipt for the new shoes she just bought and prove she only spent $20.no

Guaranteed for every one pair she tells you about......there's 3 she didn't.

I'm braking a girl code!!!

Your welcomesmile

Theres another 56 Olds on KIJIJI 4dr. "running & restored 3 on the tree for in the 8G range, from my past experiences over the yrs. it's sometimes [always] better to buy the better car, cause your going to 'dump' a pile' into a "cheapy" & still not have the car you could have if you bought the better one!!!& be ahead of the game!!!!

exactly pete. if you can find a car that's already done at a reasonable price, that's the way to go. by the time i've finished my vette i'll have 20k into a car that's worth 10 or 11. this summer ask around at bridgenorth, there's always somebody who knows somebody. that's how i found my studebaker and chevelle. there is a guy i know has an absolutely beautiful 77 firebird for sale at 7800 firm. low dollar "projects" most times end up as yard ornaments year after year.
