I need to find someone in the Guelph area do do a appraisal on my car for tax. I went to get a trip permit this morning and the girl said that anything over 20 years needs to appraised for tax purposes. I had used Walter Lane before but I cant locate him. Any help would be appreciated.
That type of appraisal is different than one of the very detailed (and a couple hundred bucks) "specialty car" insurance appraisals ... shouldn't cost much more than $50. Phone your local licencing office, they should be able to help. Pretty sure you'll find that TONS of people in your area are qualified to do that type of appraisal (I had one done by a used car dealer).
edit: the girl at the counter should have been able to either direct you to an appraiser or told you where you need to look to find one.

Should add, make sure you specify, when talking to a potential appraiser, the type of appraisal you require ... don't want to get suckered into one of the expensive ones by mistake.

Any used car dealer can do it . last one I had done was 35 bucks but the guy was close , And guess what you pay tax on whatever one is higher.... the bill of sale or the appraisal .
The local mechanic around our area did one quickly for free based on the safer he did. There was no book listing my my ranger so I payed tax on the appraisal.
been down this road with my Valiant. When I got back home and called the guy his numbers were no good. I got the confusion figured out about the trip permit and got a guys card from the girl when I went back.
Thanks for the info guys
I purchased the body for Dog Spit out in Saskatchewan and paid $3800 for it and that is what the bill of sale said. I went to Service Ontario and was told I need an appraisal. By this time the only part I was using was the main body and the condition it was in was appraised at $500. This time I took both the bill of sale ($3800) and the appraisal ($500) and they charged me tax on the appraisal. I'm sure if Kathleen had been standing there, she would have demanded tax on the higher. I think the reason for the appraisal law is that most people present a lower value when they go to licence the car.
Yep, & if the vehicle is listed on their book I'll bet a doughnut they will take which ever is the higher value!!! Sometimes it's best not to show your Bill of sale until you need to???
