Gone on Cogeco too and everywhere else I guess . They are pushing Velocity channel on Cogeco but you need a hi-def television ,which I don't have and won't get just for the velocity channel .
Yeh - and no reduction in the bill. now they want you to sign up for some new channel that's really about the same thing but more $ hopefully this new law that's supposed to come into effect next year will stop the BS from these cable companies. I haven't had a Bell product in years and never will again. They've bought up some other phone companies to try to make up for all the business they've lost. I think Verizon is really Bell.

I used to get Speed Vision here. Now the same channel has Nascar race day. Stuff from last week.
Also on the same channel they have those monster trucks and not much else.
I'll probably cancel all cable except internet.
Here in London, Rogers has had a preview of a channel called Velocity. It's the Discovery Channel's car stuff. Not bad but the preview is over tomorrow. I wonder if it'll be on the pay per channel deal.
I spoke too soon.
I turned on the TV and went to channel 41 where the car stuff usually is. Automatically it went to channel 42.
For sure I'm cancelling all the TV and just keep internet.
Speed actually died a year ago when ABC bought the rights. It has now been changed into ABC Sports which under the current rules can't be broadcast by a Canadian cable company. Speed had to continue broadcasting, mostly with repeat stuff to fulfill a contractual obligation with Shaw, some company in Australia and possibly a few other cable companies. That obligation has now run out and Speed is gone. Speed at Shaw was packaged with other Sports networks which for the most part are redundant to other stuff you already have. I am now going to cancel that sports package and if my Velocity stops, I will replace the sports package with whatever package includes Velocity if I don't already have the optional package. As for Speed, it was probably under 25 cents as part of the big picture. I haven't watched it in years except for NASCAR hub sometimes. Stupidest thing on wheels and My ride sucks weren't worth wasting the electrons to broadcast. History and National Geographic have better automotive programming. Give me a good Bar-B-Q show any day.
Here's what I found out today
Shaw and Shaw Direct will be dropping Speed channel. It is very likely that this will be the end of Speed channel as a whole in Canada.
- In somewhat related news... on Feburary 12th, 2015... Discovery World HD will be re-branded as Velocity. Velocity will be great for gear and motor heads (mechanic type shows, that used to be popular on Speed and TNN/Spike)... however at this time I'm not sure about the volume (or if at all) of motorsports (racing) that will be seen on the Canadian version of this channel. Here hopes that TSN, Sportsnet, or others (like Velocity) pick up some of the content we'll be missing by losing Speed. Or maybe another motorsport specialty channel will arrive in Canada in the future (Motors TV, MAV TV, a brand new specialty sports channel just for Canada).
It would appear that the pressure is on to convert to HD. I also gather that Speed Channel was a Fox product and it seems they were not happy with Shaw.
See the following ;
-Unfortunately this was bound to happen after Fox (owner of Speed network) converted the American channels to Fox Sports 1 & 2. Here's the timeline.
-August 2013 - Speed Channel (and Fuel TV) in USA re-brands to Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2. With this change, Speed channel now only broadcasts in Canada, Australia & a few Caribbean Territories with limited programming (simulcasts of the motorsports events on FS1/FS2, and loads repeats of old Speed series).
Do what I did put up an antenna 31 channels in HD and the best part no bills. I was tired of paying more to watch TV that insurance for my car. No you do not need a analog decoder or a HD antenna. The best antenna is a Delhi antenna from the 1980s and the flat screen TV sorts out a clearer picture than Rogers cable.

Can you get TSN on Antenna??? Cause that's where NASCAR race is on if they pick up the feed!!! Occasionally it's on FOX out of Rochester NY but not very often

That's the one I was thinking about Wayne. Couldn't remember what they were calling it.

Tell us more Joe.. Can you buy these antennas somewhere? My wife's tired of me complaining about huge cable bills and nothing worth watching.

On Bell the free channel was done mid morning.
It said on the website cost is $4.00 to get it back.
So we originally had SPEED. Now it's gone the monthly cost is still the same.
Now they want another $4.00. Good deal!!.
If I lived in belle river like Ragtop I would have an antenna pointed at Detroit. Wouldn't have to worry about a monthly payment.
I used to live near Lake Erie. I had an antenna there.
I could get stations out of Ohio they were good quality. The antenna was only up 20' in the tree's.
If the cost of dish keeps going I will be going back to an antenna.
When it cost more to watch TV then it cost to heat the 1200' shop,, the house,,cook supper,, heat the water there is somthing wrong.
I have been seriously thinking about buying a Dish Network system and going that way. A couple of years back I had a Direct TV setup that worked just excellent and I got all the sports and movies I could handle. Then they buggered up the cards and the new ones at the time were $4-$5oo . I didn't have it at the time so I let it go. We moved and now all I have is Cogeco which sucks worse than Rogers and Bell and my bill goes up every month by 2-4 dollars . I have been reading up on Dish Network in Canada and found it is available here but is apparently in a "grey area" as far as the powers to be are concerned.
I found out that even if you try to switch providers here in Canada they, like the oil companies, keep their pricing close so its not worth the trouble to change. So much for free country.
As of midnight last evening my Shaw satellite dish has become a thing of the past, ever time I sat down to watch TV I was annoyed that there was nothing worthy of watching yet sat there in disgust anyway and wasted time that I could have been in the shop or pinstriping something.. The Netflix or streaming video through the iPad on a Google Chromecast stick is my only option now.. I have an awesome monthly Netflix type deal I pay $5.99 for unlimited viewing and it is completely geared to motorheads , have a look gang, it's been two full months for me now and there seems to be new content added weekly.. http://www.motornation.tv/

Chris, do you get that over the internet??? My set up here doesn't give me "unlimited use of "Interweb" so I have to 'watch" how much usage I' have, downloading from U/tube etc. just kills me on the bill!!!!

I'm in the same boat here....no YouTube or videos of any kind...We get 20 gig of data for $90....$10/gig after that....Internet bill is usually $100-$130
As for antenna....we would only get about 3 channels here, 2 of them french.....so stuck with the stinkin satellite.....$120 month, same as it costs to heat my house.

Just curious, where in Ontario are you and how/where did you mount your antenna? (not looking for an exact address, just the general area ... I am just east of Toronto, not too far from the lake). I use an old antenna that I bought used, sold originally in Radio Shack. Bought it for $60 probably close to 20 years ago, and have never paid for cable (can't miss what you never had ). It's a Mini-State antenna by Antennacraft. I tried splitting the cable, to feed another TV and the pic quality dropped to basically unwatchable ... I then scoured Kijiji and bought another one ... now I have two antennas in my attic (didn't bother mounting them above the roof line although I might if it gets me that many more channels). I don't get 31 channels, but I do get quite a few (edit: just checked, I get 21).
I should add, the channels you get with an antenna are HD. I get a better picture than my parents get with their cable feed (they don't pay the extra for an HD box).
I am interested in trying one of the newer style antennas that are on the market today (the one below is a pic of what I am presently using). Nothing wrong with the ones I have, just wondering if something newer (like made AFTER the year 2000 ) gets better reception.

No TSN. I have come across Nascar on some weekends, but I don't remember what channel it's on (not a follower of Nascar). I'm probably seeing it on Fox.

I checked out that link, but it seems that there's not too much content. Some of the premium programs are only a few minutes long. Am I missing something?
Premium, programs are all part of the $5.99/ month package, lots of full length shows to choose from, I see for those of you who wish not to subscribe that the classic car movies can all be viewed without any subscription. I have Xplornet high speed internet with a 125 GB package for 84.99 a month, was paying $148.00 plus for everything from Shaw to get the package our family wanted... I love it so far and you are not locked in,if you try it for. Month and decide it isn't for you , unsubscribe and it's done..

The guy that hooked me up is Brian 905-242-1993. The antenna is no longer available so he rebuilds and sells them. There is another guy that first told me about the Delhi antenna is in the Bellville Area and found him on KIJIJI. I have a 60 foot freestanding tower as I am in a low area. Brian may be able to tell you what to expect to get with an antenna in your area. As for the antenna direction the wife has never had to turn the rotor yet as she gets Rochester, Toronto and Buffalo all on one setting. Times have changed when you were always fiddling with the rotor to get rid of the snowy picture. There is no snow now like watching satellite .
I almost forgot to reply what is on TV. I have not watched TV since last Fri. I here the thing playing in the background and the wife watches CSI what ever, Ghost something or other or The Big Bang thing. Google what is on TV and no I do not watch car related shows in years except BJ a little on the net. But I do know I am saving $1,608. a year from my NET PAY a year to go towards my next project and that works out to $8,040. the next five years if the cost does not go up. Better than RRSP.

I had a 56' self supporting tower, VHF/UHF antenna, rotor, and amplifier given to me a couple years ago cuz the lady was going to a sat. The bottom of the tower was rotten, so I cut a couple feet off and made a new base. Now we pull in more channels than we need, and the price was right.

I watched Speed Vision all the time until Bell (Fibe) cut it off with no notice after calling them they said they didnt have the rights to show it through Bell but i got the new discovery velocity on HD channel only through Bell Fibe for like $1.00 extra a month
Love it get all the great car shows, esp Barrett Jackson Auction

you can check http://tvfool.com/ with your address.. and it will tell you about the channels you might receive
See the local TV transmitters on a map and check their signal strengths.
I live south of Kitchener Waterloo,, low in the Grand River valley,, I have a 60" HD Tv and for the most part... all channels are great ! Ch13 CTV NEWS transmits in some weird format.. not HD and square instead of wide screen or 16x9 or all the other sizes... so watching the local news can be a bit grainy ,, but the other channels are very good...
I get the same programming the MiL gets on her basic cable package... I get it for Free
I used to have a standard TV,,, with a digital to analogue conversion box,,, it worked fine too...
and just to add... I have a signal amplifier .. which makes a world of a difference..
I checked with the wife and she tells me that we actually do get a full 31 channels. She informed me that she had removed 10 channels from our "channel scan", as the removed channels are ones we would never watch (I was unaware she had done this). So, the bottom line is, with the antenna I showed in an earlier post, and with it mounted INSIDE my attic, I actually do get a full 31 channels ... in HD ... and most importantly .... for FREE
Bell called last month to review my service and if I wanted to include sat. TV I told her I was thinking of dropping Bell all together seeing how many years outdated their technology was. She told me they were not. So when I asked her why I was being build every month for touch tone telephone $2. tells me they are in the stone age. Long hesitation then said she had no control over that. Goodbye

Just checked area map on that TV/Fool site, for my area, looks "WORSE" than the crappy cell phone coverage I have> only 2 or 3 channels that had a mid strength signal!!!! all the rest were below minimum to receive them with a tower height estimated at 40' OH well, crappy Phone , crappy internet, & this won't work for me either!!!!

We just have an antenna on a tower and receive at least 20 channels. We don't have much interest in the American channels so are quite happy with our reception. We use a digital to analoge converter box as we have a perfectly good older TV and see no need to change. The rotor quit so I guess that will have to be replaced but overall we are happy and no cable bills. Ed

We also used (and still use) the old tube type tv's and the digital converter (with antenna). That system works just fine for us too.
That said, recently we replaced one of our tube tv's with a flat screen. The new tv's don't require the converter box because they accept digital signals. Also, our tube tv's were not "hd ready", so, even though we are getting an hd antenna signal, we weren't actually seeing the picture in hd ... what a difference when we installed the new (led) tv ... the picture quality on the new "hd ready tv" is unbelievably good and a huge improvement. I expect you will be VERY impressed, if/when you get one of the new tv's.
Just a FYI...if you are going to buy an antenna....don't get mixed up with the marketing of a "HD Antenna"...any old antenna will work.....I built mine out of coat hangers and I get 30 some channels...with out a preamp....and it's stuck up in garage attic....saying that I live close to detroit..

Cris, do you need to watch it on your PC or can it be seen on a tv in a different part of the house? Thanx

I dumped my dish years ago. The wife bought it for me and they told her I could get all the same channels I had on the big dish. They weren't there . I phoned the dealer and asked where to tune in and he said they were there and he would get back to me. I'm still waiting. For me to go back the price will have to fall and the programming options increase by miles. I'm thinking "it ain't going to happen".
For those that would like to see what they can get on an antenna from your area, try this link. I get most if not more from one of the older style antenna's and a rotar and no amp.

That is still $84.99 X 12 = $1019.88 + tax $132.58 = $1152.46 a year and in 5 years that is $5762.30 towards a nice engine or to watch a couple of your favorite TV stations. And how much do you pay for car insurance for the year or heat your house. We are hooked on electronics Bell and the rest of them are just reeling us in. Free to air has changed drastically compared to 10 years ago and people are now finding out is why 95,000 went back to antenna last year.
