At the risk of starting something crazy hear, and trust me I KNOW this will set off a fire fox and for that I'm truly sorry up front!
I did a search and had no luck, so here goes.
as most know or will see I'm building a 56 F-100, I really like the look of no bumpers with roll pans, am I setting my self up for failure (During Safety) that said with not really knowing anything has it ever been legal and do we just get away with it? will it cause me grief after the safety with the cops, MTO and future possible inspections?
I realize this may be an open question that I may have my own conclusion to, but I really don't like the look of the stock bumpers and really don't want to install any, and 50% of the classic trucks I see these days are without bumpers.
Go easy! I'm just a newbie at this and may ask dumb questions, but someone else may want to know and may not ask.
my 55 gmc came from the factory with no rear bumper. was an option for my truck. don't know but might have been an option for yours.
Thanks for that info, I seem to remember back in the 70's the rear bumper was an extra?
I remember putting together an old VW to go to work, and I had no bumpers and they made me put vertical pipes about 6" long on all 4 posts and it passed.
My understanding is that you must have a front bumper
That's what I had thought but so many have non I wonder how strict the Safety is on that? maybe you need to go to a friend of at least a hot rod friendly shop?
Still do the cops bother you, I mean as much as I like Rat Rods how are they on the road if bumpers are such a concern.
Been running my 52 Torpedo back 'sans" frt. bumper for 3 summers now!!! Like the "gasser" look, no problems so far!!!! Can always say it's at the chrome shop!!!!!

Good questions to ask If you change it after safety, you probably won't get hassled... wonder if you could put a bumper bar behind the rolled part My Suburban has a bumper cover... I'd take a chance actually I'd get a hot rod friend to build me the rolled pan over bumper bar suggestion good luck
why not every new car is build like that plastic bumper on the outside but behind there s steel ,
I think years a go in the sixties on truck the back bumper was on the option list ain t sure but I seen lot of trucks without them
and I don t think it is written on the mechanical inspection list
As late as 1993 I bought a brand new truck and I didn't pony up for the rear bumper option - truck rules are likely different from passenger car rules and they likely changed a few times since '93 too!

I don't have a bumper on the front of my 53 m100. No hassle passing the safety. They were sticklers too. I do happen to have a brand new bumper at home though that I may put on one day as I kinda like the look of the stock front bumpers.
New vehicles just use a rubber fascia with some styrofoam behind it. Could you hide a steel crossmember( if there is not one already there) behind the front roll pan, put a piece of styrofoam in front of it, and refer to it as an impact zone???
The main reason I have a front bumper is so I don't have any problems, 4 bolts and its off! I don't mind the front bumper, it hides a lot. I get razed sometimes about gassers not having bumpers, but I just let them ramble on as I stare over at their car and count all the mickey mouse things they've done. So if your knocking my front bumper and I'm staring at your car......you know what I'm doing. LOL!!
Thanks for all the feed back guys, I have the bumpers but just love the clean roll pan look its only about 7" off the ground there.
Donnie I would love to come see your car and laugh at the bumper! and yes I would be envious, its a real looker.
Moobster good call, I do have heavy structural right behind each roll pan and in the back it was by design to protect the fuel tank. I even over built it with 3/16" Aluminum so that's how I will sell it if asked.
Nickeleye, imo your truck looks great the way it is but I always say it never looks right until the owner is happy with it! I do like the way Chip Foose shortens them and tucks them in tight, I also think the complete mono tone paint scheme bumper and all has been done lately, it makes it all disappear. I love the front end of the 53-56 F-100 its the reason I went with the Ford.

I like the "crumple Zone" idea, I have the structure so it should be no issue in principle, just need the Mechanic's by in! I'm at least 2 years away yet unless I have a money truck run into me and feel bad enough to leave a bag of cash.
Hey Cat, but for someone like myself, I don't know anyone other than the corner shop to certify. I guess the question is will most anyone look at a cool custom and appreciate what you have done and give bumpers and other small custom touches a nod, or will they just be money sniffing slobs and say the rules are the rules its my licence go fix it!
in the case of most of our rides should I find a hot rod friendly shop or is it your opinion and experience that it will most likely not be an issue. I see lots of hot rods every year they had no issues.
Take a picture of the front of your truck to the guy
Doing the safety and if he squawks. Move on
I think they are more interested in brakes and steering
Glass and overall safety. But im not a mechanic
I use the same guy for all my builds and have never had a problem
Great idea thanks,
I had an OPP follow me for 10 min while riding my custom Bobber, no turn signals foot clutch hand shift and 1 brake lever to actuate both front and rear brakes, the bike was professionally built by myself and my friend (37yr Harley Mechanic) the bike was well done but just barely street legal. The cop pulled me over and I thought I bet I did not signal properly while he was on me?
Nope!!
Good evening sir, do you know why I pulled you over?
No sir?
Well I was following you and just hoping for a reason and finally just wanted to look at the bike, its beautiful and I just wanted to see it up close.
True story! there are some cool cops up our way, never had a problem.
I drove my GTO without a front plate for 6 years, it was a US car and had no front bracket for the plate.....never had a problem. I probably would be okay without a bumper on my gasser, but I like it on.
I would but I probably have more money in fabricating and re-chroming the bumper then I do in paint! LOL! Do you still have your car Glenn or are they just old pictures, I know you said it sold.
