Project 1969/71 402 BB.

So had knee replacement surgery on May 21st, laid around for the first three weeks and that was enough of that. So in my shop I have a 1969 402 block with a crack in #7 about center of the cylinder, I have a set of 300 hp heads off a 1971 402 that I had purchased for the block, it is a 4 bolt main, with the complete motor also came a 6212 Holley Spread bore, Torquer Intake a new Cam Shaft/Lifters/ Springs/ Timing chain set/ Steel Crank,0.10 on the mains Std. on the Rods with the new set of bearings, all still in the boxes.

So seeing as moving was not easy, so I set up a work area and a chair and started on the heads, porting and polishing and reliving the area around the intake valves. I plain to open up the seats and put in 2.25/1.88 valves, stock are 2.06/1.75, peanut port heads the old guys call them.

The block is a 2 bolt main 1969 402 325 hp MT L35 one of only 1528 made that year, TO730CJA. my plain is to sleeve the block and bring it back to life, but at the same time make some trick adjustments to make it breath better and make a few more ponies in the end.

I am also building a new motor for my Pro Street which has aluminum heads 320cc runners 119cc combustion chambers,2.25/1.88. Air gap 850 DP Holley

almost the same motor, my intention is to Dyno both and cross section the results, and see how ported and polished works compared to the aluminum heads. and in the end the motor will be put in my 1952 Pontiac.

I will provide pictures and updates as it progresses.

Interested in following your build. Glad the leg is better. I have a 68 396-60 over in my 57 Chevy wagon. 8.89CR using stock 71 300HP heads and an RV cam for towing our camper trailer. The biggest flow restrictions on the 71 was the low riser intake where the flow went up into the heads.

Polishing done, drop off block and heads at machine shop, still not sure if block can be salvaged, waiting for the the Pro Street motor to be assemble,we have decided to go with a Mechanical Flat Tappet cam in this motor, just trying something different this time, giving the old truck a little more grunt at a higher RPM.

As for my work on the heads it was a quick job just to clean them up and get them flowing better, and please feel free to comment, I like to learn and any imput would be appreciated, Pro cons anything you would like to add,

Henry, cool 57, took a little more time and meat off  the top of the intake side, will see how it will flow. I am going to have the Torquer in take and will match it up with the heads. Thanks for the heads up.

That block can be sleeved as long as the crack doesn't extend to the ends of the cylinder. If it does, the block needs to be welded or just get another block. Sleeving is not a very hard procedure, but requires precise machine work.

I am about to sleeve a 454 block that had water in two cylinders which froze and knocked the sides out of the bores. Its better when the cracks or holes are not in line with the thrust. They usually are not since the cylinders are not cast round - they are thicker on the major and minor thrust sides.

Hey,Rick same sort of deal with this block, for some unknown reason the heads were taken off and the block left under the leaking part of the shop roof. The crack is at the back of #7 if you look at the picture you can see the valve cut away on the block deck, and the crack is in line with it. Does not look like it goes top to bottom, but not sure.

Just a note, I left the 375 hp short block and went for the blocks that were lying around, and try to make something out of what otherwise would have made it to the scrap pile. Thanks for your feed back.

I am doing something similar with my 2nd 454. I have one 454 built out of the good parts, and am now building one out of the leftovers I have laying around the shop.

Block needs two sleeves, crank is standard but rusty, I have a set of 30 over flat tops, and a set of 236 casting peanut port heads. It will have about 8:1 compression, and a RV cam. I bet it will make about 350hp but will run on any gasoline and be a good truck motor. Plus its all "throwaway" parts so I don't really care what happens to it.

I was going to put a cad 472 into my 59 apache, but I think I will put this in instead.
