Is it me or do all automotive retailers and dealers go out of their way to hire people with no automotive knowledge whatsoever. I spent 4hrs on the phone today triing to buy a new alternator and not one person new anything but how to read a computer screen. Ended up getting the old one fixed, I can already feel the pain of that coming, probably cost more than a new one. And the government wonders why people cross border shop even when the US dollar is at a 20% premium.

not just the automotive end, it's everywhere. it's how much (little) you'll work for, not how much you know.

You guys need to go rock auto..They have excellent pictures of your parts, they are great to deal with..and even with the exchange and shipping still cheaper than anyplace you can buy in Canada 3 to 4 days shiping..right to your door..no bull**** with customs they have their own broker no suprises at the door..

Ex: today I needed a fuel pump to help a friend..checked with my local jobber ( I am a full service shop spend plenty yearly with my Jobber) he said He would help me out a bit so he quoted me 200.00 plus tax.. 98 chev pick up..I checked out Rockauto..with shipping, tax and exchange on our dollar..$136.46..total delivered to my door..same part.???? WTF ??? I have used them for years ..Check them out I like to compare my part with their info pictures..You are wasting your hard earned money trying to buy auto parts in Canada..check their prices..when you get into the catalogue watch for the little red heart they are there most popular sellers..read the instructions on using the site but you buy twice as much for I/2 what you pay in Canada..

Rockauto..

Has anyone used amazon.ca for parts?

Actually used Amazon.com. Always seemed to have more on their site and free shipping over $25. Do a search with part number or description and I also have bought a lot from Rock Auto. I worked for a large jobber in Southern Ontario for over 20 years and when I wanted to rebuild the diff and brakes on my pickup I couldn't touch the prices and shipping from Rock Auto. I use a U.S. mailing address at Lewiston and slide over and pick it up.
Jobbers now don't want to pay much more than minimum wage for parts people and you get what you pay for. I know of a couple of parts guys that are gearheads and will find my parts if I can't wait for shipping.
Sure is different than when I was on the parts counter in the 70's....

You guys should quit picking on the guys and girls who get up off there buts and go to work the few hours they do get, get paid peanuts and have to put up with the public. You guys can operate a computer so you obviously know you are at the mercy of the program .That is the way there programmes work, so deal with it. If you have a beef take it to the owner and tell him you only want to see 60year old ex mechanics earning 20 bucks an hour on the desk. Then you would complane about how much stuff costs. Time to get it thru your heads the kids aren't the problem the system is. I have had all 4 of my kids work in retail outlets and they come back with just as many stories about idiot it customers demanding refunds for stuff purchased at some other store, trying to return used stuff without a bill, and one of my favorites the 300 lb woman returning a pool chair cause she couldn't stay on it. I have many mr fix its coming into my shop asking for a switch for a dryer, what kind of dryer, don't know, how old, don't know, what switch, the one that controls the heat, there are 4 of those which one do you want, just sell me all of them I'll return the ones I don't kneed. There is no return on ele3ctrical parts I tell him so if you buy them they are yours. Fine guy buys them and sure enough next day he is back ,I want to return these , I told you no refunds, they didn't fix the problem so I want my money back, I cant take these back cause you installed them, ya but I was only trying them out. No refunds I say again , ******* he says and storms out. Ya gotta love the consumer. Just remember attitude works both ways guys and the kids hate asking the questions as much as you hate answering them. Ed

On this topic, we share the same opinion.
The poor kid is trying to do a part time job with out the proper training, no support from the managers, all for minimum wage.
He has to answer the questions on one page before the next page comes up, for the next set of dumb questions.
Blame the programmer.

I work at the local NAPA........Things are not like they used to be....You cant just walk in and buy something for a 55 Chevy any more. Back then, a 55 Chevy was the only model they had...now Chevy has many models.....and many more parts....Everything has to be on computer, because if it wasnt, the store would have no room for the parts, it would be just full of books. Things are just so much more complicated these days. The new employees do get lots of training, most are pretty computer savvy....but they have to get all kinds of other training too......from safety training to inventory control. We now have to bar code scan everything that comes and goes.
Gone are the days when the counter guy can just grab something you need from memory

True dat!!!!! some of the older guys who worked in the local "  UAP " NAPA store could just go to the shelf and pick your part without looking it up. Nowadays, there is no way that could happen. Just too many parts and people are just too demanding these days. You can please some of the people some of the time , but, an A-Hole will always be an A-Hole.

The fault lies with those who buy the cheap crap, not those who make it. Ed

AH! words of an ignorant employed, no french required over paid person.
Teacher? OPG/Hydro 1 worker? MP? Bell? Canada Post?
Sorry all my jobs have gone to non white, non canadian(read quebecers), handicapped, trans-something, other sex people of rodent flavoured asians.

Yes it is my fault that the government has sold us out ! Free trade means the rich business owners get product for next to nothing to sell to the same consumers that are now working minimum wage jobs or cannot find one.

You are the lucky one, try the people who thought they had stability when the were hired at target. Where are they now?

Ignorance it what fuels this downward spiral, where do you work? Is your job 100% secure? No job is! Job cuts, injury, illness, earthquake or cheaper foreign outsourcing? Maybe we need Greek economics :D

People who eat cat food are the reason beef is over priced. Nice logic, surprised you have a job, or is it social assistance.

Hey! you said the stupid remark first.

Oh Oh. There it is the dirty words "Free Trade" . There was nothing free about that deal. It cost Canada hundreds of thousands of good paying jobs over the years. That, along with the metric system changeover cost us dearly. When the metric system came to being prices instantly increased as product sizes decreased. The yanks laughed at us and called us whiners against progress and increased trade. Then the yanks signed free trade with Mexico and watched their jobs go south and our whining was nothing compared to theirs.

People who are working these days are lucky to have a good paying job. In this area "ALL" of the good paying factory jobs have gone south. G M ,, one of the largest and best paying employers in the area struggles to keep open . All we have here now is the " hospitality " industry, low paying to minimum wage jobs and the Casinos which are struggling thanks to the better services in Niagara falls N.Y. and the machines pay better too.  You are right , it is our fault, but we,re the ones who elected them jokers in Ottawa and Toronto and if we want anything to change we are going to have to figure out a way to boost our own economy and help our own people and then worry about the others.
