A cry for help-1954 chev 210 4 door handle locking plates
Permalink

I am trying to help my neighbour with his 1954 chevy 210 4 dr door handle locking plates. The door handle seems to go in flush and the locking plate goes in behind the tabs but the plate seems to be a long way from the grooves in the front and back of the door handle itself.

Does anyone have any insight into how this is supposed to go and what might be wrong? i think the after market gaskets may be too think but there seems to be more of a gap than that.

any help would be appreciated, I am trying to get this guy on the road!

Thank you Slim,

I have read this section before but I have just been holding the inner door handle up while my buddy puts the handle in.  After we do this the door handle functions properly but we still cannot "install retainer to position".  The manual makes it sound so simple.  I will try again doing exactly as it says.

has anyone done one of these?  I wonder how much force it should take.  Also are front and rear outer door handles the same?

I am not sure about the front and rear being the same ..where does the door key go usually just in the front doors..and I hear yah on installing the wavy horse shoe clip..Im use to have a tool for that but I have no idea where it be now..It was like a square block about inch & 1/2 x wide and an inch thick had a handle with a very slight offset and a slot in the backside of the square block and you would fit that wavy horseshoe into the slot and give it a good shove..worked like butter on ur dick.. I also remember the aftermarket gaskets ..try throwing those gaskets in some warm water while your working on them you might even try fabricating a ft long piece of board ..hack saw a little grove to put that 90 end in wrap a little duck tape(red-green style) watch for skin removal on inner-door skin and give her a good shove..some times prayer helps, sometimes swearing helps..it's really about the way you hold ur mouth..and I have even had luck doing a little jig around the car after the fourth try and throwing it across the shop..any one or none of these suggestions may or may not work...biggrin

Thank you Chris, pictures would be great! He got 3 other handles on some time ago but this one is being extremely difficult. Knowing how they come out may help us figure what is going wrong. We may need to ask about buying original plates from you too, these are re pops. Would love to see the finished shave job too!

Chuck,
I will try building a tool to push in the retainer. I have already traded my skin for door skin. Neither that not swearing have yielded and positive result so far.

Hey Patrick ,sorry I forgot to get photos as I took the handles off the car I'm building last week bit there really isn't anything to show you that you cannot see by simply pulling the handle out of the door when the clip is removed anyway ,there really isn't much to it though, the clips can even be tricky to reinstall with the handle and clip roping hot in your hand though, never mind on the car. A side note too, the handles are the same front and back ,beyond the fact that the fronts have key locks and the rears do not..

It sounds to me like he successfully installed three of the handles some time ago, and is having difficulty installing the fourth.  At this point, you arrive with the intent of helping with the install of the fourth, but haven't had success yet due to not really knowing how they are supposed to go together and/or incorrect/poor repro parts.

I completely understand the fear that the repro parts could easily be causing you issues, but as far as how these things are supposed to go together ..... couldn't you just remove one of the previously installed door handle setups to see they are supposed to be installed?

Ugly can physically install the clip on the handle off the door to fully understand the way the "should " go together.. Since photos were not going to be of any more help than doing this I had gibpventhe handles and clips away last Saturday when a friend popped in with a new toy,lol..
