Okay so I have bought this new '56 Ford Fairlane 4-Door sedan and it runs/drives and has clean paperwork. I recently stumbled upon a sweet little '52 Merc on Kijiji It has Buick taillights, Olds headlights, etc. Pretty neat little car but a TOTAL project. Car will need new floors, new hood, etc. Anyways turns out the current owner lives about three minutes from my apartment so I drove over to his house to check it out. He then came to my apartment to check the '56 out. Seems like we both want each others cars and are both willing to trade. Here is the problem though...

The current owner has lost the ownership for the Merc and it has no paperwork. Now I have only lived in this provence for a little under five years so I know nothing about how all this works. Is this going to end up being a pain in my ass? Can I get an ownership for the Merc? How will this all work?

If it is too much of a pain in the ass I may end up passing as even though it is a two door it needs A LOT more work than my new Fairlane does.

Mitchell , speaking for myself , I would pass if there was no ownership . I suppose in my old age I play to the side of safety biggrinbiggrin  ....don't need hassles . There will be other cars out there for you . Check on Craigslist for Buffalo , for instance , to further your search .

As long as it has a VIN on the Merc he should be able to get an ownership for it. First he will have to see if the vehicle is in the current system. If it is he should be able to get an ownership easily. If not he still can but it will be a little more work. A car without an ownership or VIN tag is worth about 4 cents a pound.

Shouldn't be a problem if the guy trading is the current owner. "HE" goes to the ministry and pays a fee and gets the ownership reprinted and then comes to you with it for the trade. I wouldn't proceed until he has the ownership.....but that's just me. My other Nova is still in my Mom's name and she can't find the ownership but ministry says just come in with her and they would print another for a (small) fee .

But I agree with Lightspeed about it needing to be in the system

...another thing , don't buy a car from a seller unless he is also the owner ( which is why you need the ownership ) . There is a possible scam called " curbing " where let's say I try to sell you a car I don't own . Somebody else does . It can open a whole can of worms regarding possible theft , a lien on the vehicle etc ....that's why the ownership is important . Let the seller do ALL the necessary legwork , not you .

Last time I bought one (seller's kit) it tells you current owner and it has a bill of sale form which is "more legal" on the last page.
Pick him up and drive him to the "service Ontario" and it can be over quickly.

If he is the real owner, which for some reason I have my doubts....If he was, he could just go and get a replacement

Yep all of the above!!! So many people get cars, don't want to change over the ownership to avoid paying sales tax, then decide to 'flip" it later on, & either lose the title or don't want their name to show on any sales slip so say they lost it!!! Pain in the A$$ for you to try & get it, so let him do it or "walk" If you do, do the deal, get car in your name "unfit' by having a "sales" appraisal" asap & pay the tax at the low appraisal, if you wait till car is too far along in the build, your going to get "dinged" big time on value!!!!
