I used to really like Windows XP when I got my first computer ( yooz Apple guys can be excused from this discussion ) but as equipment failed with age I was forced to go to Windows 8 and then 8.1 . I will readily admit that I went kicking and screaming to the new tablet style format of Win 8 . but , like single-ply toilet paper , you get used to it .
Along comes a "free" Win 10 download if you have 8.1 already . I asked around with varying answers ....and then took the plunge on my older of two laptops . It worked , so far , and didn't lose anything . The new system did rearrange my hundreds of car pics but once I figure it all out , it's probably more organized than my old way .
I kept Google Chrome as my browser rather than go to the new " Microsoft Edge " that they push in Win 10 .
Anything to report ??

I loved XP , like I said , but when my old computer blowed up , I couldn't buy XP nor was there any support from Microsoft even if I did manage to keep it .
If you have Win 8 , you will have to upgrade to 8.1 ( free upgrade ) and then do any and all updates before you can switch to Win 10 .
my dad had 8 on is laptop. i upgraded to 8.1 for him but he still hates it. guess next visit i'll put the 10 upgrade on for him. my wifes is using vista, i have 7 on the boys laptop and my old desktop wont die with xp pro.

Still using XP. Had a new laptop with Vista and hated it. Did a partition and added XP to it and just ignored Vista completely. Computer crapped out and I just stayed with the desktop one I still have. Wife bought a new laptop recently, not sure what it is, I've never touched it. I'll have to make a change someday....but I don't have to like it!! Waiting to hear reviews like..."Hey, I love this, it's just like the old XP"
I would say that the Win 10 has an " XP feel " to it , somewhat I'm told like Win 7 . I don't know about Vista but haven't heard many good things in the past .
I loved Windows XP ... After a few hours ... I got to really like Windows 7 ... it was pretty easy to switch to the new operating system ... Thought I was getting something 'good' with Windows 10 and the price was right ... Played around with it for a few hours ... mostly trying to get it to act more like Windows 7 ... instead of all the new programs it wanted to force me to use ... then went back to Windows 7 ... I may give it a chance in a few years ... when they get out of the 'beta' testing phase ... and I'm forced to try it again when I buy my next computer ... Luckily ... its very easy to return to your previous operating system for up to 30 days after you install Windows 10 ...

yup Windows *.1 leaves your fingers brown.</p>
Still on XP and like it. I also enjoy FireFox 2.0 clean & light with and ad-on that blocks anything to do with assbook and licked-in. I works fast for postal speed internet...... dial-up hell.
I have machines that run all versions of windows. 8 get the most complaints from people about the missing start button and forced hardware upgrades.
Windows in general is a bag of sh!t, it is like a V10 in a firefly with 1:1 gears and the parking brake on.......... can do all kinds of stuff that no one ever uses. Sucks power and hardware and goes nowhere slow.
but what are the choices?
I can see me with win 10 in 2030

What browser are you using ? On Chrome , my " favourites" are on the bookmarks bar ....should have been imported from your other browser . The bookmarks bar is at the top of the screen .
So , to recap , " assbook , licked in , bag of s**t , sucks " .............marking you down in the " no" column .

That pretty well sums it up ...
Favorites are the 3 light grey lines in the upper 'toolbar' beside the STAR that used to be favorites ... I never bothered to find/set up for 'outlook' ... why bother ...
I had Xp from 2002 to the middle of 2014. A screaming hard drive forced me to change, so i figured why piss myself off trying to figure out Windows 8 and went to a mac. A bit of a learning curve that was unavoidable anyway . No regrets at all.
built a desktop pc a couple of years ago - spent way too much doin it , like , you know everything that one sets out to build
win 7 and ie 9 still work for me just fine and there's a simple reason I won't upgrade beyond that
I use google desktop .. it still works with win 7 and ie 9 but won't with anything newer
why is keepin google desktop important to me ?? simple
when I wanna search for something all I need is my keyboard - no moveing the curser to the searchbox with the mouse to start typeing something in it
I simply hit the control key on my keyboard twice and a searchbox opens in the middle of the screen that I can imediately type something into - hit enter and I'm on my way..
big recomend on logitech K810 bluetooth keyboard - it's lighted and the gearhead wireless mouse
both work from anyplace in the room with the PC
mouse also has page back n forward buttons on the side and sideways scrolling by tilting the wheel left or right
definately 2 of my best purchases when I built my pc
though you still need a regular keyboard kicking around so you can use it if needed dureing boot up as bluetooth is one of those things that isn't yet running when looking at the which way do you want windows to start screen
also big improvement ditching the old school disc style hard drives
nothin but solid state hd's for me from now on
the s s hard drive is absolutely quiot , not a sound comes from it , not a peep
only thing that makes any sound in my pc now is the cooling fans and those are turned down low so as to keep em nice and quiot
if anyone wants to build or upgrade their desktop pc I'd also recomend the corsair closed loop lliquid cooling system for the cpu if your case has room for it
ditch the stupid heatsink and fan stuck on it
the fan's always fail and the sink always fills with dust killing the cpu - lost a few that way
I'll post some links for this stuff if I can in a sec
keyboard - might seem a bit expensive but it's worth it trust me
also , I forgot to mention the keyboard can be used with up to 3 different devices as long as they are bluetooth ready
there's 3 buttons at the top left of the board to sync with each device like your pc , phone (REALLY HANDY) and something else if you have it
cpu cooler cheeper than you would expect and has a program that lets you set fan speeds , led heat warning colours and more if you buy their other components to work with it like the power supply though the cooling system is stand alone and needs no extra parts to make it work if there's room in your pc case for it
Don't know how true it is but I was told that after Windows 10 has been in use they will go to a subscription service, either monthly or yearly where as they can't with the older versions.....makes sense to me
Briggs & stratton P3 600 256mb ram 10gb hard drive on dial up......... catch me if you can !!!
The worst thing is people don't realise, it is still windows 3.11 with a Fucting baffle you with bullsh!t GUI.
All cars have 4 wheels and an engine, windows 10 is just racing stripes and spinner hubcaps. But if it is free........... where is the catch? They are losing to Linux distros, Google hemroids, smellybeans and cell phones, BAIT and SWICTH.
So that's a NO!

A lot of people I know have and like Win 7 . Keep it as long as Microsoft gives you updates and decide after that . When my old system croaked it was too late to get 7 , wish I had , but I was forced to take 8 or go to Apple .
If you buy 10 after the free period it will be about $120 .
I'm going to test the waters with my desktop, going from 7 to 10. It's easy enough to reformat and reinstall 7 if it's a complete bag of s%^t. I get the distinct feeling once everyone has switched and is comfortable with 10 they're going to nail us with a subscription. Probably something like the base version is free but if you want all the features you once had and paid for in 7 that will be extra.
My work laptops are going to stay 7 as long as possible, too many programs that may not be compatible. I don't feel like being a guinea pig.
My home theater PC is probably going to linux. Windows is killing media centre and netflix isn't supporting it either. Too bad, it's worked quite well. I can run everything from a remote and it's easy enough my 5 year old can run it. Linux running Kodi might not be so user friendly but I've got some learning to do with Linux. At least linux will be more stable, I had to program one of the remote buttons to reboot and that button sees a lot of use with windows.
I find it extremely slow - as in it slowed my laptop to a crawl - and it is brand new with a terrabite? of storage/memory - so memory and storage are not the issue
I find it very hard to navigate around in as compared to 8.1 which I just got onto.
Lots of things to keep the geek happy but nothing for us normal people
Well I asked the same question on my model railroad forum ......they're all old guys but are a bit more "nerdy" with computers ( except for me ) ......and there were about 25 responses .
1. 4 people will wait a while before they do anything .
2. 10 liked the change over and all went smoothly .
3. 7 people tried Win 10 and will go back to Win 7 for various reasons .
4. 1 guy is keeping his old XP ( If it ain't broke , don't fix it )
5. 1 guy , like Henry , flat out hates Win 10 .
Nobody had anything good to say about the Edge browser but most haven't really tried it ...they kept their old browser , Chrome , Firefox , etc . Everyone seems to hate IE , including me .
One guy reported his computer was very slow with Win10 but admitted it was slow with Win 7 so he has another issue I would say .
For the little bit that we use the PC,we have upgraded to 10 and it seems to work just fine,I had 7 so never had to go through the crap of 8 or 8.1, doesn't seem like hardly anything changed for us so we are happy!
My daughter has 8 on her laptop,I think I'll get her updated too!

Randy , Win 10 is more like 8 if you select the conventional desk top , which took a while for me to appreciate after XP . I didn't like the "tablet " feel to the new desk top it but it could be changed to the more conventional desk top without all the goofy tiles . Win 10 does work faster I think and I have grown to like it .

this hasn't been mentioned it seems in this thread but win 10 keeps and reports your browsing history to microsoft
you know , like google and google add sugestions
there is a download that turns this off but the catch is that the download installs it's own browser tracker and reports the info to the people that supplied the download
Any google O/S does the same, your info is their power to sell ads.
I really only surf forums, classifieds (for car parts) and check mail so XP id good.
The stuff I mentioned above mostly does not need horsepower just a good connection. An old computer on high speed will out perform a new one on dial-up. The small amount of work the computer has to do for less "visual" site is an easy task for it.
Windows got bigger the computer is faster yet everything is the same speed.
If you game online, download or stream movies/music or skype you may find the newer windows somewhat helpful.(to manage tasks efficiently)
everything is done to generate revenue, software designers have to change bullsh!t (that really does nothing) so everyone has to update, the programs get fatter and you need more horsepower the pull the software "honeywagon" so they sell you a new computer with a useless window.
You don't need a tractor trailer to get milk at the store, it depends on your needs.

I just bought a new laptop with 10 installed. It works great but I had to get used to navigating around, I like it but I am far from using it to its full potential.
It does take time according to everyone I've talked to . I do like the way the photos from my camera don't need me to install the software that came with the camera .......it did take me a while to figure out the whole camera pics versus downloaded from internet pics thing but now I have separate folders and it works quite nicely . It just took time because it's different .

I'm going to stick with 7 and 8 for now. I have 7 on my gaming rig I built a year ago and 8 on my laptop as long as I can. I hated 8 when it came out but found a way online to gave it the feel of win7 to be rid of those tile things. With Win10 being free makes me a bit worried about whats down the road.
