Thanks for posting that Whitey!

Gary Challice is very excited about the quality of the entries we're getting for the show.

We're re-adding the 'tuner' room, which is called Spring Fever and will be in Hall 4.

Special guests announced so far include: Steve Darnell from Vegas Rat Rods & WelderUp, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) Jimmy Shine (So-Cal Speed Shop & Jimmy Shine Workshop) and Jeff Lutz (Street Outlaws & Hot Rod's 'Drag Week / Weekend').

We're working on others, and the schedule will be published ASAP at www.MotoramaShow.com.

If anyone wants to help spread the word about the show, there's a post that has a link to a web banner package at: www.motoramashow.com/webbanners2016. Please let us know if you do post a banner, so we can reciprocate.

We were really happy with the way things went last year (our first time doing the combined hot rod / custom car and racing show... and we're excited about this year's show.

Thank you for letting me post here!

Greg.

Here's a press release about this year's Featured Club at the show. Thank you for letting me share it here.

ROADMATES CAR CLUB TO CELEBRATE ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY AT MOTORAMA

Toronto-area group to be honoured as the ‘Featured Club’ at this year’s show

TORONTO, ON // JANUARY 28, 2016 • If the members of the Roadmates Car Club were looking for a location to celebrate the club’s 60th anniversary, they couldn’t have picked a better one than the 2nd Annual Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo Presented by Mothers.

The show takes place March 11, 12 & 13 at The International Centre, across from Toronto’s Pearson Airport. In terms of their presence at the show, the Roadmates are going to showcase approximately a dozen of their members’ cars. They’ll also be on hand to meet fellow custom car enthusiasts and share six decades of memories. Adding to the club’s significant profile at Motorama, the Roadmates are being honoured as the Featured Club during the show.

“It’s great to be recognized for our longevity and stability,” stated club representative Richard Hill. “We’re pretty well-known in the automotive community, but to be the featured club at Motorama distinguishes us as one of the premiere clubs on the province.”

The Roadmates were founded in 1956, in a back alley in west-end Toronto. Derek ‘Duke’ Brown and his brother Tony linked up with a trio of like-minded friends and plunged into the Hot Rod car culture. Over time, the club added new members and they outgrew their laneway. Eventually, they moved into a large facility near Dixie Road and the QEW, a location they call home to this day.

The club’s fully equipped shop and storage area has room for 14 cars, offering the two-dozen (or so) current members a place to work on new project cars, trade ideas, hone their mechanical and fabricating skills, and ‘just have fun with cars.’

Credit for the club’s popularity and longevity go to its diverse membership. With such a wide range of members and vehicles, everyone brings something unique to the group.

Over the past 60 years, Roadmates Car Club members have mentored many newcomers to the hobby, allowing interested enthusiasts to learn new skills. Their combined efforts have produced numerous, award-winning cars.

While the club’s vehicular lineup for the 2016 Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo show is yet to be determined, it’s expected their display will feature a cross-section with heavy weighting toward Hot Rods. Expect to see some race cars, too. With a wide range of excellent vehicles, their biggest problem will be picking which ones are included.

The club will also be presenting a special one-time award at the show, called The Spirit Award, which will go to the club participating at Motorama that is ‘having the most fun’ at the show. This will be included in the Sunday awards presentations on the Johnsonville Stage.

Since its inception, the Roadmates Car Club has adhered to the motto, ‘The Road Well Traveled.’ When asked to define that philosophy, Hill stated, “It means we’ve been there and done that, and we’ll continue to do that, just as long as we can.”

Speaking on behalf of Motorama, the show’s car coordinator Gary Challice said, “We’re honoured that the Roadmates are going to participate at the show as our Featured Club this year. This is a very special year for the Roadmates and we’re looking forward to celebrating their 60th anniversary with them, at Motorama.”

Here's another one from the other day... the Lead Kings are returning and will be doing a 'roof chop' at the show.

LEAD KINGS CAR CLUB TO DO A ‘ROOF CHOP’ AT MOTORAMA
Teaming up with Lincoln Electric to lower the lid on a 1950 Pontiac during the show

TORONTO, ON // JANUARY 22, 2016 • When you think about the Lead Kings Car Club, the word “unique’ comes to mind. The 18-member, Ontario-based club is determined to remain loyal to the traditional custom car lifestyle. The widely-dispersed members drive their cars everywhere – regardless of the weather or the season – rather than ‘trailering’ them. And they prefer a ‘hands-on’ approach to customizing.

For the 2nd Annual Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo Presented by Mothers, running March 11, 12 & 13, 2016 at The International Centre (across from Toronto’s Pearson Airport), the Lead Kings will be offering something completely different in their Retro Shop display area.

“This year we’re teaming up with Lincoln Electric to do an actual project,” explained Lead Kings president Brandon Roberts. “We’ve got a 1950, four-door Pontiac roller that belongs to 16 year-old Conner McWilliams. We’re going to chop off the roof – lower it about four inches – and graft a Chevy rear roof section onto the body. It’s going to take all three days of Motorama, but it’ll be killer when we’re done.”

Headed by car builder Aaron Roberts and fellow Lead Kings car members, the project will utilize a plasma cutter, MIG and TIG welders, a hood vent and welding screens supplied courtesy of Lincoln Electric to remove the Pontiac’s top. Once that’s done, they’ll grind and fit the new pieces, before ultimately re-installing the new roof and drip rails. All of the work will be performed in the simulated Lead Kings garage setting, in full view of the Motorama show attendees.

“I believe this is only the third time a project like this has been done at an indoor show in Canada; we did the first one back in 2007,” added Roberts. “We’re doing this to help a young car enthusiast out, and to show everyone what customizing is all about.”

While the ‘chop’ is underway, the Lead Kings Car Club will have four previous projects on display, including a ‘first-time shown’ 1947 Mercury owned by club member Al Martin.
Speaking on behalf of Motorama, Gary Challice said, “We’re really happy that the Lead Kings are coming back to the show. They were our ‘featured club’ last year. Their cars are unique, and you can tell from the way they dress that they’re fun guys who love cars. We’re grateful to the Lead Kings and Lincoln Electric for working together to do a ‘roof chop’ at Motorama. It’s going to be educational and entertaining for everyone.”

ABOUT THE LEAD KINGS CAR CLUB: Frustrated by the direction of their former club, in 2007 the Lead Kings Car Club was created with the purpose of retaining the traditional custom car lifestyle. With members residing from Sudbury, to Waterloo, to Oshawa, the Lead Kings regularly cruise their cars (“there are no Trailer Queens here!”) across the province and to such places as the Detroit Autodrome and Las Vegas. As a charity contributor, the Lead Kings have raised in excess of $40,000 to aid the Tri-City Literary Foundation.

ABOUT THE MOTORAMA CUSTOM CAR & MOTORSPORTS EXPO: The second annual Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo Presented by Mothers takes place March 11, 12 & 13, 2016 at The International Centre, adjacent to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. With a footprint of almost 300,000 square feet, the show will be Canada’s biggest late-winter celebration of automobiles and motorsports. Announced celebrity guests include Steve Darnell (Vegas Rat Rods / Welderup), Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) and Jimmy Shine (So-Cal Speed Shop / Jimmy Shine Work Shop). For information about the show, including tickets, sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities, and more, call (416) 962-7223, email info@MotoramaShow.com or visit www.MotoramaShow.com.

GENE WINFIELD TO APPEAR AT MOTORAMA
Legendary builder to have a high profile all three days of the show

From his first nationally recognized build – a highly-modified 1956 Mercury titled ‘Jade Idol’ – through a jaw-dropping lineup of creations that have been seen on the street, in innumerable car shows, and on television and movie screens through the decades, Gene Winfield has developed a reputation that is virtually unrivalled in the world of elite car customizers.

The legendary builder, designer and painter is scheduled to be present all three days of the upcoming Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo Presented by Mothers. The show takes place March 11, 12 & 13 at The International Centre, across from Toronto’s Pearson Airport.

During the show, Winfield will participate in several capacities. In addition to hosting his own booth and selling collectibles, he’s also going to assist in the awards presentations and take part in the VIP Meet & Greet sessions that feature several other automotive and racing celebrities. Winfield will also be part of the hot rod discussion panel, which takes place Sunday on The Johnsonville Stage.

“This is my first trip to Motorama, so I might as well make it a busy one,” noted Winfield. “I’ve got a lot of 1950s memorabilia that I’ll be selling, along with tee-shirts and posters of some of our cars. What I’m really excited about is unveiling our new book to Canadian car fans. It features 500 pictures of the cars and things that we’ve created, many of them that have shown up in the movies and on television and in commercials. It’s a history of our business.”

Dating back to the 1960s, Winfield’s work has appeared in the following television shows: The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart, Batman, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible. His big screen vehicle credits include: Blade Runner, The Last Starfighter and Robocop, among others.

A native of California, Winfield first joined the custom car fraternity following the Second World War, eventually opening the first Winfield’s Custom Shop in his mother’s refurbished chicken coop. Teaching himself to weld and paint, Winfield – who will soon celebrate his 89th birthday – ultimately made his mark on the custom car scene with his refinement of blended custom paint, a technique where colours are carefully faded together.

While he continued and expanded his car fabrication business – both in America and abroad – Winfield was selected by Aluminum Model Toys (AMT) to become a consultant style designer for their plastic model kits. Winfield’s imagination resulted in an impressive catalog of AMT ‘3 in 1’ model kits. And when the company expanded into the full-sized market, he followed along as a builder of promotional vehicles.

His influence was also felt in Detroit as Ford, and then Mercury, utilized Winfield’s design suggestions to add custom touches to their lineup of family cars.

Over the years, Winfield has nurtured many automotive and artistic connections, one of which will have a direct connection to the 2016 Motorama show.
Building upon a meeting with custom guitar builder Apostolis ‘Spanky’ of V8 Custom Guitars, Winfield agreed to a joint effort where the two would combine to craft and paint eight personally customized guitars for a select clientele. One of these unique pieces, number four of eight, will be presented to ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons, another celebrity guest at Motorama.

“Billy knows about this guitar; it’s been waiting for him for a while,” explained Winfield. “It was just a matter of coordinating a time when ‘Spanky’ (Apostolis), Billy and I could get together so we could give it to him. That’s going to happen on Saturday, March 12 at Motorama.”

At an age when most men are well past contemplating retirement, Winfield shows no sign of slowing down, putting in regular shifts at Winfield Rod & Custom and currently working on eight different projects. He still participates on the salt flats at El Mirage and Bonneville aboard a re-creation of his Ford Model T ‘The Thing,’ and is preparing to drop a new powerplant into his dirt Sprint car. Looking forward, Winfield is also putting in motion a new design; one that he hopes will earn him the coveted Ridler Award at next year’s Detroit Autorama show.

Speaking on behalf of Motorama, automotive coordinator Gary Challice said, “We are extremely honoured that Gene Winfield is going to be part of this year’s Motorama show. He is a legend in the industry and it’s an amazing opportunity for our showgoers to be able to spend so much time with him at Motorama.”

Nice to see a couple of my fellow Roadmates cars. The "New Old Guy" is Ron Calder's altered. I think he will be 80 this year and still loves to run this down the track.
Sorry to miss the show this year.

Once I got over my headache from the ‘tuner section, it was a very good show. Lots of variety and quality – I especially like the detailing that goes into each display, particularly the engines. Foose’s Impala was stunning but there was lots of high quality local stuff too. Randy Colyn took Grand Champion with his beautiful 48 Anglia, and Brad Oates took the Canadian Street Rodding Hall of Fame “Heritage Award” for his ’32 5 window – well deserved.

Whitey , can you shed more light on that beautiful Merc ......some guys are saying it's a 55 ....another says it's 55 side trim on a 56 .......I don't know the difference other than the grille between a 55 and 56 and this car has been customized . Can you straighten this out for me ?

Hi Terry, my uncle's Merc started it's life as a 56 and has upwards of 40ish individual interior and exterior "Kustom" modifications. Although not confirmed, I suspect that's why his display sign states "Tri-Five Merc" as it a compilation of 55 - 57 attributes (and not all Ford/Merc). I will also post a pic of the beautifully detailed 312 Y block with 3 x 2 's.

I will scan and post the promo card he was handing out at the show that pinpoints all of the modification work.
He has been building cars since his early teens and has had everything from 27 T coupes and tubs to several 56 Mercs (original and customs) and everything in between. My favs are his 35 & 36 Fords (coupe and convertible).

He sold this 56 just before Motorama.

Thanks for asking about it!

Sorry about the quality of the two scans, I am using the office's equipment this morning. These give an idea of about half of the various design elements incorporated into this build.
