I built my bead roller about 8 years ago. (Sorry no build pics for it) but always wanted to power it as my wife didn't always smile when I asked to come to the shop at 10:30 pm to crank the handle. Couldn't figure a cheap way to do it until Chris Stapley showed how he did his. A 1/2" reversible drill, a starter drive and flywheel and a little ingenuity and things come to life. Chris used a chev but I had an old Toyota flywheel and starter kicking around so I used that.
Shaft size is 1", so I bought a 1" weld on hub and machined up a flange with the Toyota pattern on it and welded them together. Bolted on the flywheel, slid it on the shaft, marked the set screw spot and used the manual milling machine (hand file) to put 2 flat spots on the shaft for them.
Took the starter drive off an old starter and welded a 5/16" counter sunk bolt to it. A washer and a coupling nut turned down just a little on the lathe, screwed them together and a few welds so they don't come apart. Part 2 done.
The drill I have has 2 spots on the side for extra handle, they are 3/8" fine thread, perfect mounting points. Welded a couple of threaded blocks to the bead roller, made up some flanges, a couple of spacers and put it all together. To make sure the drill didn't kick up I made a strap to go around the nose of the drill just behind the chuck. Welded it in place. Voila, powered bead roller. Test piece worked well, just have to order an foot control pedal off of amazon and good to go. I should paint it now that it's done, but I hate painting.
Thats awesome Mike, glad to see someone else make a tool out of a shop ornament too! I use my bead roller all the time and am starting to use it for artwork as well now. I may need to bring you a couple patterns to cut me out a set of shields before the gears eat my arm off....
I thought a set of guards might be a good idea too. Then again it would take the steampunk flare out of it....
I hope to get some more use out of mine soon as I will be redoing the floors in my 38 for the new frame.
I want to make a set of tipping dies for half rounding corners while making tanks.
Always more to do, sigh....
Thanks again for the idea.
