4BT Cummins in 1949 3100 pickup
Permalink

Last week Andrew Steckle, of Bronson Line Automotive Zurich, travelled to Ohio and picked up a "complete" 4BT  with bell housing and T18 trans   ($3050)

The 1949 Chevrolet 3100 was bought on a visit to Colorado (3 years ago)  I spruced up the interior and added missing windows

Engine codes as a 235 6 cyl. with bull low 4 speed (needed in Colorado mountains..

Because Andrew is young (40), his interest is in trucks, and mostly Diesels..   His diesel repair shop is always full of Diesel work...

Andrew built the * 2000 Florida Suburban with Duramax  which was bought by a fellow Ont Rodder

Member recently made a deal for another Florida  2006 white Yukon XL with "Quad Steer" and Duramax added    (Starting next week)

He also build a * 2005 Ford King Ranch crew with Cummings Diesel and a *Orange 2005  2500HD short box 2wd Diesel 600HP  1042 ft lbs. torque

Andrew was also, the provider and builder, of the chassis for the Canadian Tire Ice truck (TV commercial)...

SO  its a no brainer to add a 4BT Cummmins for the 1949....

Here is a shot of 49 and 4BT   and 3 photos of the start (yesterday)   Imagine the front end "unbolts" after 67 years !!!!!

It was ice cold.....   14,000 lbs of ice   I pumped the BFG's to 110 lbs      My mother died at my home, while I was painting the CTC chassis  :(

I gota say Carl427 , you are one talented guy. If our govt folks had as much talent at what they do as half the guys on this site we would not be in the **** hole we are now in this country. I truly marvel at what you folks do with the cars I see on this site.
regards Gerry

The most I have ever paid for a 235 is 450 complete including the transmission but that one had a 200 dollar  mini Hei on it I wanted.   You never know someone doing a restore on a babit pounder may be willing to cough up  start high and see what happens

Mocking up the engine mounts  (using the 4BT brackets)  and having to build a trans crossmember

I told them to box the frame (because I am old and know these things)

Josh said he only needed to box it where the engine mounts fasten disbelief   If it cracks anywhere else, then he will have to pull front end and engine later  lol

Trying to locate a S10 2wd rear end  (want the drum brakes)  4x4 is disc.    Also Installing a custom aluminum diesel tank in front of box

That motor would be worth around $500-600 if it is pressure oiled with insert bearings as a good runner.   In 1952, not all of them were. - only those that came with an automatic behind them originally.  If its a babbit, splash oiled motor, price it about half that as they have a bad habit of eating the bearings suddenly.

I have picked up several of them in the last 5 years to replace 216's and splash oiled 235's.  Never paid more than $200 unless it was a 261 as they were all bought as cores.  Good runners should easily get more.

The 4BT is now in the truck!   Clutch hooked up     front mounts are 4  Canadian Tire hockey pucks

rear mount is modified original   Oil pan was turned around to clear   new sump added today

I pulled some 60/40 seats from a 98 pickup   Took Tracks off   seat will sit on the floor  (so Andrew can sit looow)

He bought a S10 for the rear end  GU4 3:08 ratio.

It will be going in tomorrow

The 4BT fits really nice…

Not trying to be critical but why am I not seeing any evidence of the frame being cleaned down to bare metal before any welding took place? How is this possible without contaminating a weld?

Great question biggrin   I will ask Josh about it ..  I presumed he used grinder and cleaned the edges of the C frame and added new metal to Box it

Fired it up at 4:30   nothing fell off       But I will ask Monday

It's not my truck but if it was mine I would hold onto that original seat.

When he gets it on the road and decides he doesn't like the junk yard seat he will still have the original.

Just my opinion.

I agree   but I did post it and we did get a call   so we will sell it    My young friend is 40  He's into Diesel and tire smoke  lol     I set the 88-98 seat in just for mock up  he wants to sit on the floor   He's 6'3 270   but I have a another friend with a seat frame spring set   I can get it re-covered IF thats what Andrew wants   Hes my friend and I will have happy life making sure truck is done the way HE wants

but I do appreciate the thought and  we have a backup plan...

He's built a Cummins powered 05 Ford King Ranch Crew

A 2000 Suburban Duramax  (sold on this site)

The CTC Ice truck chassis

and a 2006 Suburban Duramax Quad Steer

and another 2004 Suburban Duramax Quad Steer (starting next week)

and a 2002 Ford F250 with Cummings

and now the 49 with the 4BT

here is a link to his 2005 Orange 2500HD short box 2wd 600HP 1042 ft lbs torgue   (GM never built a short box red cab Diesel)

This is Andrew biggrin

TMJ     thank you..     took your advise..

The original seats w/o the frame,  suit Andrew as far as sitting back and low

So we keep the original look, and the new Saddleman seat covers....

Sold the engine for 400.00 and the trans for 275.00     Happy Happy

Just have the seat frame and gas tank and the enclosed rear end     Do you think anyone would want the rear and and torque tube???????

A few years ago I bought a car that was originally American not available in Canada. The guy before me gave the bench seat away thought Nissan seats looked better.

My wife and I drove half way across Michigan to get another one. It cost me a fortune too. So I've been here already
