Thinking of putting a winch in my shop to pull the truck in from outside. It is easy to roll out as it is all down hill, getting it back inside is hard. So can someone explain how much pull strength I would need.
I use a 2500 LB to pull mine up on ramps if not running, Use a 'snatch" block pulley, [ double cable] which doubles the pulling power [ 5000LB] slows the speed down but works. Pulled a full size 4 door Jeep onto trailer using this method, owner laughed when I got the winch on trailer bracket & said "NO WAY" wasn't laughing when Jeep got hauled up onto trailer!!!

Any neighbors with big 4x4 atv's ? All the guys around here could pull tree trunks if they had the traction, and always have some nasty winchy thing on them.
Here's my thought on your system though ..... since your intent is to drag something that rolls, up an incline, it might be wise to fashion some sort of something (what the hell does that even mean? ) so that IF the winch system fails or the cable snaps, your vehicle won't be able to run off back down the incline. Could be something as simple as a length of 4x4 wood that drags from chains/cables, behind the car, yet the rear wheels will run up against if the car starts going backward, hopefully stopping it before any damage occurs.
Sure, someone in the drivers seat can serve the same purpose but there isn't always someone handy when you might need them. Just something to think about

mine is a 4500 lb. i mount it on a removable base that can be used on the trailer or in the shop. my winch is the type commonly used on larger boat trailers.

I had a hand crank boat trailer winch mounted to some pieces of lumber such that I could attach the winch to a hook or tree with a piece of chain via the boards the winch was mounted to and attach the cable to the car
worked fine for draging stuff around the yard and it was dirt cheep too
if it's strong enough to winch a boat up onto a trailer it should work for pulling stuff into the garage if the grade out front isn't too steep I'd think
a tid-bit, depending on the steepness of the incline you may want to mount the winch up off the floor. a cable running along the floor onto the car will more or less be trying to pull it into the incline. a cable up off the floor will be pulling it up the incline not into it. the car will come with it on the floor but it is a much easier pull if it is off the floor depending on the steepness of course. easier pull = less winch needed.

I too was contemplating putting a winch system of some sort in my garage at one point and I could just picture the car letting loose and heading out into the street with nobody in it (my drive has a slope to it too).
I've made enough mistakes up to this point that I now try to think ahead in hopes of outsmarting "Murphy"

Thanks guys, The slope in my garage is not large but enough. Just concerned about pull strength. Good idea about raising it off the floor. Builderrhys, that is what I was thinking of doing. Was looking at boat type winches as well but the thought of cranking 25-30 ft. does not impress me at all.

the boat winch i have is 12v not a crank type.

So I found a winch (3500lbs) within a price I was happy with. Bolted it to the floor on the weekend. This sure makes life easier to pull the truck back into the shop. The battery comes from an alarm system for high security doors. An old one I had kicking around. It was 12 volts so used 2 small c clamps to hold the cables on for now. Should probably look for an atv battery at some point.

I use a 3,000 Lb. two speed hand winch and even winched a GTO on to my 30 Ft. deck over trailer with only one short break. I mounts on a Reese receiver so it gets moved around from trailer to trailer making it very portable.
