A few years back, I had a hard time getting $400 for a western cab, no rust.
If it were me, I would save the time and effort, and source another cab as suggested. They aren't too expensive.
I agree, a better cab to start would be ideal. This one is pretty solid otherwise though, and I think I have a way to fix it. Volkswagen guys have a patch panel for a bus that looks about right to cut out the pieces I want. They will need modification, but it will provide the smoothness needed to seal the new windshield. Cost is about right too, and I have John's Bug Shop locally to order it for me when I'm ready.
I will watch for another cab before I get started just in case. If the right one comes along it would save me in other ways too. Door hinges (mine were cut off), window regulators, door latches, glass, etc.
This cab was a gift from my son this Christmas, so I'd love to fix this one. It also has just the right number of honest dents for the look I'm going for.
Thanks for the advice!

Well, I guess I have to hand it to my son. He's a better body man than I thought. He had the day off today and aside from a trip to visit his car at the Bug Shop, he spent time welding on my cab. I think he did a great job, don't you agree? The metal is 1/8" thick around the frame with a 16 guage pinch weld seam to mount the windshield.
very well done. you will probably end up with some work off of the forum if that's an example. i can see the project will be a little faster with a pro welder on the team.
