Needed a tow

Second time in my life that I needed a tow!

Saturday, took my wife to the Jalopy Jam-up... Two hours each way. Had a great time. Stopped in Fergus for lunch and gas. Not 5 minutes after leaving the gas station, the car started bucking like a champ! Figured it was bad gas (how many people are buying premium from the station we went to? Is the gas stale because of slow turn around?). Nurses it to Georgetown to pick up my boys. Threw some methyl hydrate in the tank in case there was condensation. Seemed to run better within minutes.

Took it out on Sunday and it ran fine all day... Even came across the 401 around 90MPH for quite a while. No drama! About 3 miles from home... It s#*+ the bed and died! First thing I checked was the fuel level in the carb... Empty. Took a fuel line off and cranked... Nothing. Fuel pump died.

Second tow of my life! They told me it was an eta of 1.5 hours... I told them I could walk home, return with the parts and fix the car before that! 20 minutes later, Fred's Towing was on scene.

After the boys went to bed, I went out and modified an old pump for boost reference. Had it installed and running in short order and the car is back to its former glory! Wondered why it wasn't seeing full boost... Now I know it was going too lean!

Problem fixed. Lesson learned. Keep driving it hard!

Second time in a week that my fuel pump died ☹️
This time, I fixed it on the side of the road with an electric pump I plumbed in as a temporary fix to get me home.

Now I am going to upgrade the fuel system. I have a new 3/8" sender. I'm going to buy my pump and lines on Monday and I just found the right regulator. Not going to be cheap, but I cannot be left on the side of the road again!

what are you using for the pick up in the tank - the o-e pick up ?

you want to be carefull about running hard into the boost when the gas tank is low as I doubt you have a pan in the tank to prevent fuel slosh away from the pick up

that means going lean driving hard into corners or up N down hills or hard launches

wise advice I read once upon a time is keep the foot out of the happy peddel when you get to 1/4 tank
