In Praise of Good Service

These days we all like to complain about poor service wherever it arises , given the high cost of doing everything . Well here's the flip side .

Long story , medium length :

My dear wife and I completed the Friday grocery shopping in the early afternoon and within 4 hours of packing up the cupboards and fridge with the foodstuffs ....the FRIDGE QUIT ! Yeah , on a Friday of long weekend at 6pm .  The fridge is only 4 years old  , called Sears and after about 7 or 8 " press 1 for this , press 2 for that " , I get a recording saying everyone is busy and please hold ! Hold on to what ? biggrin

Fuming , I look on internet to see if I can somehow diagnose the problem ....nope .  Coils not dirty  , wiring seems unbroken etc .

I can barely sleep over night , so get up early and go to  a small town of Essex , about a 20 minute drive and get to Essex Appliances at 5 to 9 A.M.  People have mentioned this large , family owned appliance store in the past but this is my first visit . Since I know the size of fridge I want , sales lady gets right to it , offers a price that is in the range I wanted to pay , and we discuss delivery ...........all  the delivery trucks are doing their routes for the day ( Saturday )but she talks to the store manager . He will deliver the fridge , using the owner's Dodge pickup ! The fridge was in my house by 10.15 and put together and running by 10.30 . ..........unbelievable but true . I couldn't thank them enough .

Now , THAT is service above and beyond .

that's a feel good story, i like that. i try to buy or use local business's in our area around here both for business and personal needs as much as possible. i like to think that supporting the usually smaller local business some how comes back to me and the community as a whole somehow. try getting that level of service from any of the big box store's in your area or mine. good luck with that one, lol. not to mention it was also a very good business jester they did doing what they did. good one. that manager and owner just created a new long term repeat customer along with all the other people that will spin-off your promoting their service, priceless. you can't buy advertising that's better than word of mouth.
good story-good for you.

I find it strange that certain industries are so different in their approach to customer service. Big box stores are the worst while smaller independents are far better. Like your experience, I’ve had great service at a couple of local independent appliance dealers. I’ve had to buy parts and get technical advice on several occasions for some older appliances we have and both places were generous with their advice and had the parts I needed, at a reasonable price too. Other sectors of the consumer market should pay attention but they don’t.

The one area I feel somewhat guilty in is shopping for groceries at Freshco in the city . For years I shopped at the 2 small stores
in town but now that we are on pension income I have to save every $$$ and food costs are a significant expenditure as you all know . We shop wisely ( no steak in 2 years ! ) and Freshco saves us about $30 over the cost of shopping in town . Since it is only about a 20 mile drive round trip , gas cost doesn't change things very much .

The problem with the big box stores is the 100 000's customers waiting in line behind you

Their not going to care so much if a handful ain't happy

Though it all comes down to the person you're dealing with

I bought a big screen TV from wally Mart a few years ago and a couple of weeks later they rolled back the price by a hundred bucks

I went to collect the difference and the manager said they usually only do that up to 14 days after purchase and that it was now 15 days after but he would refund the difference anyways

Though I think he did look me up and down quickly first , probably thinking I had another 15 days to return the TV outright .... and I most certainly probably looked to him like the type to return it and leave him stuck with it as I went somewhere else to buy it again at the new lower price

I went into the appliance store in Kincardine, looking for a dehumidifier ,owner was too lazy to come out of his office, the flunky at the front counter had his bath day the week before I got there, brought in a quote he sent me over e-mail,as I was working the day before, price he wanted was 50$ more than the day before, said it was a typo....couldn't even leave his office to come to the counter 10' away...had to go to Canadian tire to get one.....some small town business' suck! We had spent almost $10,000 in appliances there when we bought our house...not another dime will be spent there now..

Have been dealing with Essex Appliance for over 25 years, initially almost exact  to your situation.

Hope you don't need it but, you will find their service department excellent as well.

Bob

The fridge that crapped out was bought at Sears 4 or 5 years ago. I think we can all say that we or our parents shopped at Sears over the years . To me they were a trusted name back in the day . The salesman who sold us the fridge told us he would be retiring within a couple of weeks after 30 years service . He mentioned that when he started there were a total of 1000 employees counting all departments . There were now 50 !!!! and he too was fed up with the direction the company was going .

Interestingly the sales lady at Essex Appliances said she , too , used to work at Sears . Looks like an institution is circling the toilet bowl .  biggrinbiggrin

We all look for good service but in many cases that comes with a price. The small retailer generally deals one on one and for the most part listens to what you are saying. If he has employees, they are probably doing the same thing. Unfortunately, he has minimal buying power therefore making his products generally more expensive, something most of us don't want and consequently up pops the Home Depots and Walmarts of the world. My daughter has a retail store and there are always enough personnel on the floor to deal individually with each client. This isn't cheap, but her customers like it and are willing to pay for such service. She is also head of the 'shop local' campaign.

On a related note, this thread should have been in the 'Rodders Lounge' section since it is not particularly car related.

Bought a new 50" TV a couple of years ago.....Price was $799. if I remember......I mentioned to the salesman that the last TV I bought (lasted 12 years) was about $2600....He said, yes prices have come down, but I would be back buying another one in about 6 years......Nothing is built to last these days, so why bother trying to get them fixed?....Throw away society
