I'm looking to put a s10 5 speed in my 34 ford roadster and was wondering what position is right for the shifter? Is it the one with the shifter close to the case or at the rear of the extention housing?

Boy, this is an open ended question. With the engine mounted, how deep does the tranny sit in the cab? A lot of people I know with pickups use the center mounted shifter, while others sitting closer to the floor prefer a tail mount with a shorter shifter handle. In my 62 Cutlass, I have the tail mount, but only because I have bucket seats that accommodate that. In my Model A, I am running a T10 and the shifter is tail mounted but I had to slightly form the shifter handle so I wouldn't hit the seat. If you are running a bench and sitting tall, I'd probably think you could use a center mount with a longer curved handle, but you might want to mock up your engine and seat before deciding. Make sure the handle doesn't hit the dash.

If it helps, I used the forward mount on the T5trans in my 29 roadster. Fell right to my hand. Small block Chev

Thanks guys I was pretty sure the centre mounted one would be the best. I know the tailshaft housings are interchangeable so what car/truck am I looking for?

Use to put s 10 4x4 std transmissions in jeep yj's they bolt right in shifter comes  up through floor same spot drive shaft all bolt right back in place...The only thing you had to do [or at least the way i went with the set up] was run an older bell housing an convert to mech clutch which was best in the bush anyway, never let ya down like hyd.
Remember doing my friends on my wedding day ...then rolled out from under it an the wife an i went on our honey moon...
Crazy times they were.
