There is no relation between a 261 and a 292.
weight
breathing
parts availability
cost

Unless you are truly trying to build a nostalgia piece, stay away from the 235/261.
It will cost you at least double to build the 261.

Thanks....but I want something different.

I have a 216 in the car now ( its my '51 chev ) ....and I want to stay in that family and do something different.

There are lots of upgrade parts around ...but your other comments are correct .

Hi,

 

I have built a few of these and the parts are not too bad.Patricks Antique Cars and Trucks has everything you need.

 

Also small v-8 Chevy exhaust valves work.Remote full presure filter would be a good idea.

Stay away from the 3 one barrel intakes.

Thanks...I have seen the Patrick site.

I was actually thinking 4 barrel but I'm just getting the engine from Alberta so I will know better about the whole project in a few weeks.

I may lean on you for info once I'm into it.

If its going in the 51  your going to want the plate to relocate the water pump ( 216 pump) so the fan sits in the right place or it will over heat. still some stuff be had at rock auto check out 1962 - C10 and it lists some parts for the 261 still

I have been waiting for 2 years for a water pump that I paid for from Patrick's. There are other sources like Tom Langdon at Langdon's Stovebolt in Detroit who deliver the goods and are more knowledgeable. I think Clifford makes a good 4 barrel manifold for the 261. There should be lots of 261s in your area. That's a lot of weight to ship across Canada. Since I now know you are replacing a 216, I concur the 261 is the obvious choice. I just finished building a 261 for my nostalgia altered. If I can be of any help, PM me.

You can pick up a  water pump at NAPA  for a 235/261 rock auto lists them for 42 bucks Can.The short shaft 216 is still available also. The Mini HEI from langdon Is worth every penny  but if your real cheap and have access to a lathe you can find instructions on line to make your own

I have no experience with Patricks Antique Cars but based on quite a bit of internet chatter it appears this business does not have a good reputation. Just sayin'

I have been to Patrick's several times and they keep no stock. They only order from supplier when you pay. They are the worst company I have ever dealt with. I have talked to them at least 12 times over the past two years about my water pump and a $25 refund they owe me and still nothing. Go on the HAMB and search Patrick's, you'll see the grief others have gone through.

I have dealt with them 3 or 4 times ,for 6 cylinder parts and flathead parts and had no problems.

 

 

 

I guess I got lucky.

Langdon seems to be endorsing Tom Lowe 12bolt.com for 250/292 parts. I think you will see his entire inventory go to him in the next year or so.  Interesting 3 barrel conversion for a Holley

That is beautiful!

I talked to both Tom Lowe and Tom Langdon last week. Lowe has no intention of getting into the 235/261 and despite rumors, Langdon is still dealing big time in them, but no 292s.

Ike, I see you are from Baden, did you know Paul Cassel? He lived there and was a very good friend of mine.

This one is from Saskatchewan with 48000 miles 

Lots of sand all over but no rust !

Big departure from my specialEnglish gassers.
