I just read the posted link. A friend had the same issues with taking horses over the border for horse shows (several years ago). The real issue here (as far as the States see's things) is that it has everything to do with the intent or possibility of earning money with the horses or in this case a race car.

Taking a car to the States where the best you can do is get a pat on the back for a nice car ... no problem. Taking a car (or horse) to the States where ANY amount of money can be won and you may have issues at the border (depending on who is manning the gate that day).

I should add ... my friend had these issues at least three years ago (maybe slightly more) so it has nothing to do with Trump being in charge.

Heading to Bonneville with a car (for example) shouldn't be a problem as there is zero possibility of winning anything at all.

Approx. 4 years ago a person I know took his race car into the U.S. at Sombra Ont. as he had many times before. He admitted there was a slight chance he could win some prize money and was stopped from entering. Several months later he tried again and gave a different answer and had no problem.

I take my race car to the states couple times a year, never had a problem I do have an ownership.

I've been asked that same question at US side about $ winnings at show I'm going to, or if I'm going to sell the car!!! I just say NO to both!!! I once said "I'd be the one spending MONEY" but got a "deadly evil eye" so won't do that again!!!

Story about the late and great Richie Evans racing his Modified at Ottawa on a weeknight. He was told he had to check in with Canada Customs on the return trip so they could ensure the contents of his rig. When he got there no one was around so they just kept going.

Next morning he got a call from an irate Canada Customs official about not reporting in. He ended up firing up the modified to prove he brought it back. Funny thing is he has more than one identical car.

Heard a funny story about DIRT Modified racer Barefoot Bob McCreadie and a short cut back to the States that landed him in, well, water. Never been able to find out it was true or not.
