TV car shows

So the other day, I was whining about how much it costs to do a car build, and how long it takes to do a build.

I was reminded that the TV shows are doing 4-6 week builds and most sales are around $50k with some exceptions where you don't hear the final price, just the original budget figures.

Like last nites Fired Up Garage build on the Fairlane for example.

And that set another thought into my mind - costs versus their show worthy sales/purchase  figures.

The average for a build on TV  is 4-6 weeks - so maybe @ 40 hrs per week

The average manpower counted on the shows is 5 - 6 men

I cant imagine that shop time billed, would be much different than up here, and would be anywhere from $65-$100 an hour. So lets use a nice happy median of $80

So that's 1200 hours, and $96k in shop time for the average TV build.

Then there are all of the brand new expensive parts - whether paid for as advertising, or purchased. That's in the 80-110k range by the time you add up, new trim, chrome, paint, new motor/trans, axles, brakes, interiors, wiring, exhaust, etc etc.

So now we have a minimum $160k rollin out the door for $50k or less?

I've seen cars that you know are a half million to build roll out for pennies, and bikes that are 100k and everyone is still smilingwink

is this fallacy for entertainment, or to reel in the average Joe into thinking he might someday follow suit, or ratings or?

Gotta love TV...smiles smilesmilesmilesmilesmile

or did I miss something?

In any event, Now I don't feel so bad about 600 hours or so, and under 30k for my average build, other than a home build usually rarely ever never recoups the man hours when you sell disbeliefdisbeliefdisbeliefdisbeliefdisbelief and maybe aint as perfectly Purdy as those TV cars

I’ve wondered about that too, but I just give my head a shake and remember it’s just entertainment, and it's no more real than Spiderman or any other spectacular sci-fiction creation. One car show I watched (can’t recall the name) showed a complete restoration on a car in a one hour show, but I listened to the commentary from the boss and they had the car for 8 months – got to pay attention! Some of the shows demonstrate good techniques and workmanship but on others, the “builders” are hacks. But, again, it’s show business and the great unwashed who watch these shows don’t know the difference, it’s just entertainment to them. I learn what I can from the good ones and laugh at the rest.

In my opinion the shows like Fired Up Garage and others like it are just there to show the Americans that even morons can make money building cars

I know EXACTLY what's missing from your equation and I only have to look at the junk in my mailbox to figure it out

all that advertising is a write off on a company's taxes .. SO YOU GET LOTS N LOTS of it
.. you're paying for it after through your increased tax load as they've written off their add costs

did someone say summit or jegs .. cool write off all the parts..
did we get a grant from the feds or the state to produce a show .. whanna travel .. or build somthin ??

all we need to do is record it

pay for my "project" write a show .. apply grant
presto .. cool ride

Well start off going to Toronto Film School for four years, then attend Ontario College of Art and Design for another four years. Next, surround yourself with about 1000 contacts and knowledgeable people in the film industry. Develop an idea and start writing letters of proposal and concept. Fill out and justify applications to every film industry and support group that you can find. Start your own funding and find investors that are willing to fly with your idea and maybe after living in a basement apartment in downtown Toronto for ten years, you might be one of the lucky ones.

Everyone knows that these shows are all about advertising, so hence the product placement and name dropping. If the shows weren't inexpensive to produce, they wouldn't get made. The shops and owners in these shows only look at this as a platform for increasing actual shop business and perhaps getting on the autograph tour.

Every province, state and country has an publicly funded arts council whose purpose it is, is to fund artistic endevours weather it be the traditional concepts like painting and sculpturing or buildings like museums, art galleries and theatres but now includes the film industry for both cinema and TV. These councils exist for many different areas like sports, architecture, health research.

Wheeler dealers on Velocity gives a in depth total at end of show before "flogging the vehicle" to a buyer. Very good show for the "how to" folks" and follows most repairs and tricks of the trade for repairs. heard that ED China [mechanic] left the show as producers want to cut 1/2 or more of the repairs out of show for next season!!Shame, he really explained things in "layman " terms

This is my son.  This is what it takes to be a student.  He doesn't work cheap, he works hard.  And the basement was while a student.  That's what you get for $1600/mo.  And if it wasn't for artsie flakes, you would never have to buy a TV.  Then what would you do?

I use an antenna and am completely happy with it.  Antenna's can be had for CHEEP and you already have a tv ... just sayin'

All the local channels and some stateside stuff too for ZILCH every month.

I've never paid for cable.

I thought that too Seeker but the newer TV's have their own converter.

I did not realize that until I read a post here years ago.

I was tool-bagged and ready to climb 60 feet and start tearing my tower down.

I forget who posted that info so I didn't fall off my tower. Ha !

This is correct, the present antenna signal is digital.

Most if not all "new" televisions (I'd bet on ALL) are digital ready and will function perfectly just by attaching an antenna (any old antenna) to the back of it.

For old style televisions you can buy a converter box (roughly $40 as I recall).

Just an FYI ... although the new signal is digital, there is no such thing as a "digital antenna" because ALL television antenna's work regardless of their age or whether the signal it was designed to capture is analog or digital.  Although some antenna's are marketed as being digital, it is just in the name ... my present antenna predates all this digital stuff by decades and works just fine ... I plug it right into the back of my 49" LED and off I go.  My old "tube" television needed the converter box though.

Edit:  One thing I forgot to mention, I believe most if not all of the channels I get are being broadcast in high-def so the picture is VERY good.

All that is great when you live in the GTA or where you can pick up a number of channels. Here where I live, I think maybe 2 channels can be had by antennae and one of them is French. We are kind of stuck at the mercy of Bell/Shaw satellite. Hell, I cant get even DSL over the sh!tty phone lines here....Its either Xplornet satellite (sucks), cellular (super expensive) etc.......Luckily, a new small fixed wireless company set up near here recently, trying that out.

Yeah, the real reason I mentioned it is because I see that DJD is in the GTA so I know he will be able to get quite a few channels if he ever decided to give it a go.  The story regarding the ability to still use an antenna even with the digital signal was just an answer/explanation for seeker.  The ability to actually be able to make use of a tv antenna really depends on a persons proximity to where a signal originates from.  I guess living in the "big smoke" does have its benefits, no matter how few and far between they really are biggrin

lol
JUST last weekend the buddy I share the house with went out and bought an antenna for his tv

works great I think the picture is better than roger's or bell's
- no kidding

I haven't gone to the bother of hooking my tv up though .. I don't need to go back to hearing how wonderful the peeps at city tv , city counsel, and all the magnificent downtown-ie activist's are ...

I have already heard enough .. I do not agree

as for bell tv .. yeah .. I tried that last fall
I'll say one thing from the experience .. DON'T DO BELL

...it's not cable
... it's not satellite tv...

it sure wants to pretend it's both .. but it ain't much of anything

unless you want 100 french channels , about 50 foreign language channels and twenty more kids channels

..and not much else
doesn't even compare in the least to roger's basic second level with discovery and history channels etc
ain't gettin none of that from bell

the price commitment they give you .. ain't worth shi... either
my bill WAS NEVER AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN

and since I returned their equipment several months ago I've continued to be billed

they are now up to 800 bucks and change .. and I don't owe them a cent

I know the addy says Scarborough .. lol

however I grew up and lived on the extreme east edge of scarb with nothing between me and Pickering but the mile view of the rouge valley in front of the house .. right across the street

no other houses , nothin

so I kinda grew up with my back to the city .. if ya know what I mean lol

in resent years I even went out at night if the power went out

just for the experience of returning to the era BEFORE streetlights and for a few moments .. buses lol

We live out east of Oshawa and use an antenna. We are able to get many channels, probably 10 or 12 including Global,
CTV, CBC,TVO, PBS and several American sub channels including weather and a couple of those retro TV channels . Pretty much all
the news and sports I need. Other stuff I can get online. Can't see paying big money monthly for crap when I can get
all the crap I need for free. Ed

Although the new signal is digital, it is still directional (if that is the correct term for it).  What I mean is, you can still benefit from rotating your antenna (using a motorized rotor or sending the wife up the tower wink) over the antenna being completely stationary as some stations come in from one direction while others come in from another.  For example, we need to "swing" our antenna in order to get City and Channel 36 while all the other channels can be had with the antenna in our most commonly used position where we get everything else.  Hope this helps.
