A car's body can be considered a Faraday Cage, which shields the interior from electromagnetic radiation. An antenna will work best when it's mounted on the outside of the body.
I used to use an old getto blaster for tunes in the delivery. Had the antenna up by the passenger window. Worked for me. Once had an old 52 Pontiac radio under the seat,antenna on the dash,again worked for me. As you can guess I am not really an audiophile. Hey Geoff . Ed

I have a Hidden antenna under the back seat of the wagon. Sometimes it works great and sometimes not so. Thinking of adding an outside one. I have seen them inside the front grill with good results and also under the hood over the front fender.
