Hello: If you happen to own any kind of ride with a chopped top, you are probably aware that once the windshield is less high, seeing a street light/stoplight is a challenge without the use of the dash mount street/stoplight viewer. Once I learned that, I bought one. They are a bit expensive but well worth the investment I think. But then I discovered that the mount for the viewer (there are two styles of viewer) costs about another $30 or more on Ebay. That seems a bit ridiculous to me. It is just a magnet. The other option was to drill a hole in my dash to screw the unit to the dash. I didn't want to start filling my dash with random holes while deciding where to best mount the unit. So I went on a hunt for an alternative to what is usually sold for the unit. It took a while but I found the perfect magnet. So instead of buying your viewer and mount on-line for such a hefty price, just buy the viewer on-line (the only place you can I think) and then stop into your local Home Hardware store and ask where the magnets are kept. The magnet is made by a company called Magnet Source and the magnet has a chrome cover and is about 2.04 inches across with a small hole in the center and enough depth to allow a small bolt to pass through. I drilled a small hole through the rubber base of the viewer and passed a bolt through the magnet and rubber base. I added a small lock washer and tightened it down and the entire unit now sits solid and even adds a bit more chrome to my dash. I figure I easily saved at least $30 which I'm sure I'll find somewhere else on my ride to spend it. And now you can too !
The convex mirror wouldn’t work. What cuddles is talking about is the ‘street light prism’. It allows you to see the stop light that hangs above or over your sight through your chopped windshield.
Yup! That's the one! The version I have looks a bit like a sea shell but works the same. They sell a somewhat pyramid style mount for it on Ebay for a ridiculous price. I just thought anyone with a chopped top would want to know about the perfect little base at Home Hardware for $6 or $7. Thanks for helping out guys. I wasn't sure about the convex mirror. Now I know. And I understand that the street light prism shaped like a sea shell works a little better but doesn't look quite as nice on the dash. Either way, the cheap mount looks and works just fine for both. I'll try and send a photo.
