Has anyone had any success in getting an older Chevy V8 say a 327 or 350 to meet the 1980 Emissions standards that the Ontario government has stipulated to be emissions legal in your street rod?. If so what did you do to accomplish this? How close would putting cats on your car get you? I know there is probably lots more to it than just cats. Thanks
Pulled this from the act. Any modified car with an engine pre-emission controls, (probably 1968), must meet 1980 test results even if the engine has no emission pieces. The simple answer for 1980 test results seems to be Hydrocarbons 600PPM and Carbon Monoxide 5%/vol. This is pretty easy to meet. I don't know if this applies to unmodified vehicles. I would also imagine this standard applies to any pre 1980 engine installed in a 'hot rod'.
The information is readily available on the drive clean web site. An original Model A doesn't need an Etest never did. The requirements if you are caught with an engine, not an option at the time the car was new, are that all polution equipment that came with that year of engine must be attached and working. Go to the emisions web site it is much easier than gathering opinions of what the law requires,and safer in the long run if you worry about such things. Ed
Warren, You said the hydrocarbons /600 PPM and the Carbon monoxide 5% is an easy goal to reach. How do you achieve this? What do you have to install on your motor? What is everyone doing about this issue? Thank you
HC is just raw fuel that is not getting burned. CO is your rich indicator. Most times, the struggle will be HC at idle. If you have advanced your timing the spark happens earlier and the fire goes out by the time the exhaust valve opens. Retarding the timing a little more at idle will allow the flame to burn the extra HC in the exhaust manifold reducing HC but it will also heat up more of the cylinder and put a little more load on the cooling systems. The manufacturers used to use an air pump to introduce extra O into the manifolds to help reduce HC.
If you have a CO problem its just a matter of reducing the amount of fuel for the same amount of air. Mixture screws at idle and jetting at 2500 RPM. Do you have some baseline results that we can look at?
You are no longer required to have an emission test to transfer a used vehicle . anything before 1988 is exempt. Historical vehicles are exempt.The test only falls under hot rod rule .... don't use the word hotrod.... Bring your appraisal , bill of sale and ownership ,insurance , safety. smile. I think 9 out of ten times it will be good enough.
Road side inspection "may" get you in trouble with the MOE guys, if emm. pieces missing from late model engine no matter what year it's been installed in!!!!As stated before Durham Region & now the Kawartha's are TARGET areas & my traveling friend to shows has now been stopped 4 times for road side check, [ 80 GMC Indy Pace truck] passes every time but they still keep hittin on him!!!!

MOE told me they target the trucks of that vintage as the owners believe they are allowed to remove the cats because of the Drive Clean exemption.
I had them on my 76 so they had nothing to ticket me for.
