Just wondering if anyone has had experiences good or bad with the "online appraisal" companies. I used to pay about $200 every 4 years to get the appraiser to come out and document the car. I was speaking to this company and he prefers to get pictures sent to him and he writes it up based on that for $40.00. Seemed pretty knowledgeable on the phone and the insurance company is ok with his certifications.
Always good to have an "up to date" appraisal. Friend & fellow car club member just lost his 70's chevy Pick up in garage fire [sounds familiar] & hadn't had it "re appraised" in years!!! Total loss & only getting 1/2 of real value!!! [ his fault]+ having a FIGHT with Lant's [ again sounds familiar] & not returning calls!!!! also wants to buy back vehicle for engine & rear end etc. but Insurance appraiser said he can't do that, that's the last he's heard???? $ 40 bucks sounds like a DOT appraisal for taxes???

It turns out, he offers both types of appraisals, he can also come on site if you really want to pay extra. In my case its an agreed value policy so there was really no need. I did check with the insurance bureau of Canada and they confirmed that once agreed value is written, court challenges are meaningless. The value he set was within $500 of what I thought it would be so I was happy. It was just a stock fastback Mustang so not too many variables, a street rod might require more insights???
I think Centennial College still offers the course to become an Auto Appraiser, the Ministry of Finance used to require an additional accreditation but they may all be part of one course now??
Used to be anyone could set up and become an appraiser if the insurance companies would accept your appraisals. The only accredited
folks at one time were those who had become accredited by means of a court case in which your appraisal became upheld proof, at this time
you have been awarded accreditation . This was how I became accepted by all insurance companies. It has become such a farce with the
insurance companies and their " agreed" value BS that we have stopped doing appraisals of any kind. It just isn't worth the trouble anymore.
My father did appraisals since the early sixties ,possibly before. I started when I was 16 and quit when I was 51... When Tony Lant ran his own
company ,he was a great guy to deal with, never had any issues etc... Now that he's just a broker, the Silver Wheels and Custom Wheels plans
are no better than any of the others, and as some had mentioned, a problematic system when required...
