oil leak under dashboard

Hi all, 

I have a 47 Chevy 2D on a 1988 Oldsmobile cutlass frame with SBS 305. Noticed oil leak under the dashboard. I see some oil sports on the steering column, driver side carpet and center of dashboard. its basically damaged the radio too. 

But could not find where is it from? no evidence on the firewall or any cables? 

 

Any idea how I can test this more?

Do you have a mechanical oil pressure gauge? I know this is an obvious question, but I've had leaks before where the line goes into the back of the gauge.

Yes Warren, have a copper tube plugged into the gauge. I will check is there any leak from the tube.

Warren, I could see the oil drop from the copper tube. any advice on how to fix this?

you'll need a new fitting and ferrule to go on the tube

they work like a compression fitting to squeeze the line tight and jam the ferrule in the fitting

 

you'll need a nice CLEAN & STRAIGHT section at the end of the line

cutting off the old tip of the end of the tube is your first step thus the new ferrule gets a nice seating on the tube

 

your friendly local speed shop will have them but be sure to say you have the copper line .. not the plastic one

and .. you DON't wanna swap to the plastic line .. just trust me on that

I go to Home Hardware and buy brass fittings from them. They sell the ferrule individually for under a dollar. Get a couple in case you drop one. You should be able to use the old compression nut. Like DJD said, make sure you have a nice clean section of copper tubing, don't over tighten but you definitely want a secure fit. Good luck, I'm glad you found the leak.

I should add , from experience
brass fittings to adapt an oil pressure sender to the engine ... also a very BAD idea

(I'm referring to the senders for an oil lamp or electric gauge with the teeny pin hole in the bottom - not the gauge line fittings 

those don't offer any "wall" surface to push against as the hole in the tubing is much larger)

- but it's a very quick way to rust proof EVERYTHING under the hood....

or burn it down , I suppose

as 5 litres will exit instantly if your happy foot is all the way down
