Until I have the extra cash for a hitch, I thought I’d make do with scraps around the garage to secure my vise to the bench.
I used the same principle as a tow hitch mounted under the bench so it is secure, removable and doesn’t damage the bench surface at all to install it.
Took 3 days of cutting, drilling and grinding but I got to use up some old scrap bed rail and metal scrap kicking around. And the garage hasn’t been this tidy since I built it ! Ready to get back to the rod work now. The bolts are secured only to the bed rails that slide through
the frame of the bench side. Each rail is about 18" long so when the weight of the vise is added, the hidden end of the rails push up on the underside of the bench. The small square 'spacer' made of thin sheet scrap and 2 thin pieces of plywood keeps the rails square and
levels the vise with the bench top. The spacer is about 6" square. There are two black legs that came welded to the bed rails visible below the bench frame. They limit the travel of the rails and vise at the frame. Once the bolts are dropped in, the vise can't be moved until
the bolts are removed from the spacer. Mounting this way allowed me to refrain from drilling any holes in the surface of the bench and that was my goal. The vise can be removed or set up in a couple minutes. I hope this helps somebody, at least until stores are open and we
Hey Cuddles, if you can find/make a 2" receiver to mount to the underside of the table I have a couple slide in ball mounts you can chose from to mount your vice onto. Free.
there's a lot of things to be said for bolting that vice to a nice big block of hard wood then it's mobile as hell then simply clamp the block to the benck , tailgate , boat trailer , whatever .. rock in the yard .. anyplace becomes a work spot

Great idea too but that hardwood block or stump is a better metal shaping tool than a vice holder,lol.
