Welding gas
Permalink

Hello all.  Hope everybody is covid free!  I just bought a new welder and need a 125 cft argon/c02 bottle.  In the old days I owned the bottle and would do an exchange when I needed a refill.  Does anybody know where I can find a welding supply store that still sells owned bottles?  Most of these bandits want to rent me one.

Thanks

Jim

Sometimes...the rented or leased ones are the way to go.
If you don't use them a lot they can become out dated.
If you lease, then you get a new bottle each time you need a refill.

I recently bought an 80 cu ft bottle from Star Gas here in St. Catharines. Much cheaper than anyone else ($351 filled, with tax). I don't know if they sell the 125 cu ft bottle but give them a call. They're very easy to deal with and have a great reputation around here.

Thanks for the reply.  Leasing or renting cost adds up fast.  If I own the bottle I just do an exchange with no rental fees.

Thanks

No idea how big that is but I get my gas from TSC. Bring in the empty one and get a full one.

I just went through this yesterday and I was upset that I had to pay $250 bucks because I moved and never gave them my new address and I had a outstanding bill. Ok my fault but they had my email aren't we in the 21 century but no it's my problem. Since I moved back west I thought it was best to buy my own bottle but that has it's own problems namely the bottle is so small you always run out at the worst time. Praxair is my supplier and since I'm up and running in my shop I'm using more than the little bottles have. Aparirently when you run out of gas from the bottle you bought it costs the same to "buy" another one where as my leased one I only have to pay for the gas when I get another one. I pay $90 bucks a year plus whatever gas I use I guess I'm staying with the leased bottle.

I do the TSC thing as well,, the price of the bottle is about the same as 2 1/2 years rental contract. So it doesn't take long to come out ahead. TSC won't have the real large bottles, but for the average guy and average use, you would likely still see a year or more from them before they are empty. Of course this will depend entirely on the frequency of usage. I gone through them in a couple of months and next time close to a couple of years. It will depend on what you need and do. It works quite well in my favour as an average user.

I have to get the details from Canada welding supply before I make a decision.  They advertise a full 80 CF bottle for $200.00 but not sure about a bottle deposit until I call them Monday.  TSC wants $369.99 plus tax for the bottle (refundable when I no longer need the bottle) and an additional $116.99 for the gas, for an initial outlay of $550.29 tax in.  It's good that the money for the bottle will be fully refunded when I no longer want the bottle but will TSC be around in ten or more years?  When I bought some appliances from Sears a few years ago I paid $450.00 for a fully refundable warranty if I didn't use it.  Good deal right up to the time Sears went out of business.  I'll never see a penny of that refundable warranty.  TSC is a fairly big company but so was Sears Canada.

Just got off the phone with Canada Welding supply. $200.00 for a full 80 CF. bottle of 80-ar/20-c02 and you own the bottle. Subsequent refills/exchange are $80.00. I think this is a great deal but the only down side is you have to pick up your bottle and or get refills in Bolton. Not the best for people who live too far away.

The small bottles that you own I find expensive to refill compared to the large bottle I rent. For me it is cheaper to rent and fewer trips for refills in the middle of a job. I have a couple of small ones that I own just for backup that I have only used one time in years.

What size bottle are you renting and what is the cost to rent and fill?

Thanks

That's a 5 foot tall bottle and a little too much for me.  I guess if you do a lot of welding it makes sense.  My refills are $80.00 and maybe once a year, maybe longer.  Thanks for the info.

You have to remember that yes you have to pay for the small tank. But after you are done with it you still have value in it and sell to recoup some of your cost.
