I emptied my rad so I could get a leak repaired.  In the Spring, I am removing a head to have a burnt valve repaired so I thought I'd leave the engine free of coolant since I am going to have to drain it again in the Spring anyway.  I just need someone here to reassure me that it is ok to leave the antifreeze out of the engine over winter.  I don't want to damage the block. Thank you in advance.

No problems whatsoever.
Just close any openings so mice don't take up residence.

should be no problem but make sure what is in there is 50/50 antifreeze i would guess.

you could get a "RUST" build up in block if left "dry"!! there will be some coolant left in block if you haven't opened drain ****s on block but not enough to stop rusting above coolant level.

I agree, I think what the last two posts are inferring are, fill the block and rad with a 50/50 mix for the winter or you will have more problems then a leaky rad in the spring. Rust!

you are a good mediator warren, lol. pete is right about the rust though, actually more so than i was thinking. i read it as it had a leak so why put any in to leak out, sorta thing. i guess it would boil down to where the leak is. that rust crap can add up in small doses dollar wise, i would try to keep the block full as possible with something that won't freezee, its short term.

cuddles, stupid ? but, why not take both heads over when you go. it's less than half the work to get the other one off because the intake had to come off and when he goes over it and if its in good shape it will be cheap insurance because everything is even on both sides from the gaskets on up. top end done.
just my thinking, is all.

i agree with doing both heads. The extra work to take off the remaining head is really nothing compared to what you would have to go through if you reassemble one side and run in to a problem in the summer. More work and another new set of gaskets, oil, A ?freeze and whatever. Sometimes a penny saved can turn out to several dollars extra.

remember the block doesn't drain completely unless you pull out a core plug and roll it around on the floor
soo,
make sure when draining the engine you DO NOT flush it out with straight water ..
if you do,
there's gonna be some left down low in the block when you walk away ..i

whatever is left in the block still needs to be more than half - antifreeze

OK, so I put the coolant back in the rad because the rad leak is now repaired. (I saved the coolant.) Then I drain it again in the spring. And I get both heads checked since the intake manifold is off anyway. OK. I'll take it to the guy in Young's Point in the Spring. Thank you everyone. A slow learner but now I know more than I did yesterday.
