Power steering

My grocery getter ( I love the term ) suddenly reverted to manual steering on a wickedly cold day so I went to Honda and bought Honda power steering fluid and poured in almost a full bottle.  My reservoir was almost empty.  So then I drove it out of the drive and back again but still no power steering (and boy is it hard to turn a truck these days without power steering).  Will it correct itself now that it has enough fluid or is there something else I am supposed to do ?

Generally hydraulic systems don't need bleeding. Working it back and forth a few times should do it. Maybe something is frozen because of the cold.

The last week or so my 06 Trailblazer has been tough to steer in
the mornings. It works fine after a few miles so seams
the cold is a factor . Ed

Man oh man is that good to hear. I want to sink money into my rod, not my daily driver. Thank you so very much Poncho62 and Flatback55. This site (the people in it) is fabulous.

Just had the same thing happen on the Grand Cherokee. After filling it up a couple of times a, a local shop found the leak, it was a quick fix. If yours persists, maybe Bill can fix it for you for a reasonable charge. I wouldn't take it to a dealer, they will want to replace everything.

Just turn it lock to lock to get the air out of the system, and should be good to go.

Maybe do a quick look for leaks, the P/S fluid should not "go down" and its under as much as 1500 PSI so it can be a bit of a fire issue if a hose leaks towards a manifold.  Honda will sometimes leak into the boot on the rack so you may have to squeeze the boot to find the leak.  Just a thought.

Thank you gentlemen. I will of course follow every instruction to the letter. I bought Honda steering fluid only because I didn't know if it would make a difference. I don't normally do dealership repairs but the manual said to use only Honda fluid. I learned that transmission fluid for a Fords is (or at least once was) unique and not to be replaced with transmission fluids for other makes. I didn't know if the same was true for steering fluids.
I will turn it full left and right and check for leaks again and squeeze the boot - hmm, I'll have to see what and where that is - more learning ahead for that. And if trouble persists, take it to my friend for repair. Thank you again gentlemen. It's too cold for this stuff and it was wicked cold the day it happened.

Our old Honda Odyssey did that on a trip. Turned out to be a tiny hole in a rusted line leading to the rad cooler. The spray from the leak was so fine it was hard to see and the spray went out the grill so there was no pool of oil to give it away. Lots of fun changing the line too!
