You have to give the USA border agents 72 hours notice.
So they can check for leins or if it is stolen.

You have to have 2 copies at the border you are crossing plus you have to get a ITN number from a broker, then make sure the export office is open, the one I cross at in Alexadria Bay is only open only from 8am to 4pm,they will come out to check the VIN and the Compliance label on the door, then when you get to Canada, you will have to fill out a Form 1 ,and give them your Visa card, and don't smile or joke with them, you will pay 8% tax plus a extra $100 if it has A/C ,and if it is 15 years and newer, you will have to go in the RIV program, that is another $300

Been a few year for me. Was advised to use a customs broker. Best money I have spent. Well maybe not the best but it sure saved a bunch of BS for stuff I didn't know.

Best thing I can offer is let Border Buddy do all the paperwork for you ,make sure you cross at the crossing you have set up because
you cannot deviate from this plan after the paperwork is set up.

Chris nailed it. AND - If you got a real deal on your car purchase - be prepared for them to call you a liar for what you paid, and wait around while they play good cop bad cop.
AND most border crossings for car importation are only open weekdays.

Actually, to save hassles at the Canadian border especially if you get a real good deal, I had a signed receipt from the seller and a copy of the internet ad.

The scum there will still go in and check the net. They are something else. Left me waiting 20 minutes while they looked at cars.

another X2 lol.    when i was running state side many moons ago i have crossed a couple of hundred times and have had the full gauntlet of their bag of tricks used on me up to and including the rubber glove while bent over, and believe me it wasn't that they were checking the size of my prostate.   lol
