Maybe I bought an outdated shop tool ?

I jacked the car up today and continued working on my transmission shift linkage.  All went rather well until I tried getting up off my (I think it is called a) shop crawler.  It wasn't that difficult a year or two ago. But today, I had more of a struggle getting off my crawler than I had working on my shifter linkage.  Maybe my crawler is an old defective model because it can't be that I'm aging !  If anything, I'm getting taller because when I try and get off that crawler now, it's a long way up. hahahaha

I learned this from a wise man, "NEVER get on the floor without a plan to get back up again!!!"

Always have something nearby that you can use to pull yourself upright again.

Worst thing is when you get nicely under the car, then realize it's a 9/16 you need not the 1/2 inch you have in your hand. Lately I have been taking a range of sizes down with me......lol

Like one of those two step folding kitchen step ladders . Good wide base and you can pull yourself up easier then just hands and knees trying to get off floor

vertigo & blackout & repeat - that was good ! I have a hoist but of course my rod is on the other side of the shop. Yes I take a mitt full of wrenches with me because I learned that much but I still have to get up eventually - although I guess I could take a blanket with me and have a nap.
One thing for sure - I am DEFINITELY a genuine member of the 'hot rod enthusiasts' group now. I've earned my wings. I just spent the bulk of our wedding anniversary on the net hunting for a water temperature gauge. I'll bet all here have better qualifications than that but I think that clinches it for me. And the bonus is, I lived to tell about it.

There is a reason I shaved my hair off, back in 1999 I was laying on a creaper, the one with bearings on it,I had long hair then, well rolled backwards, and guess what, all that hair got jammed in the wheels, I could not move, luckally, I had a Xacto knife beside me,well there goes about 6 inches of hair, got up and that damn creeper had my hair,to this very day I have the same creeper, and it still has bits of my hair in it,but like you said getting off of those things these days is almost like a olympic sport, you really got to plan your attack, basically I have to roll sideways ,belly hits gound first, ass up,creaper rockets out from underneath and the after 2 back surguries and having 2 discs fused,it is a chore just to get up,I sure miss my hoist!!!

That's a cool chair but they missed one option......a hole in the seat and a wide doorframe on the sh#t-house.

If I had one of those when my kid was young, my cars would be full of dents.

It's also a fact that anybody at any age will stand on a floor jack and pump it up, release it.

I have to hide them when the kids are here !!

Wow,,,,, Thanks to all for posting about their problems getting up. I've had problems getting up off the ground for years. I always just think to myself "you stupid fat old man".  I'm sure the extra 50-75 pounds I carry around don't help. The plastic/stainless knee that I'm very protective of doesn't help either. About 5 years ago I bought a 4 post hoist. It sure has made working in the shop a lot easier.  My '40 Ford took 2 years to get to the point where it was ready for paint. I started the build on the hoist and it never came off the hoist till it went for paint. I don't think my old body could have done it without the hoist.

Yes. I have hoist here also a real life saver for sure.
There's one for sale just up the road and I'm tempted to get it and put it outside
under the back deck which is 12 feet high.

A hoist ? In my dreams. Parts first. Then maybe - someday. But that's what dreams are made of.

You need to dream up a tall enough garage as well, ha.....

Exactly ! That's why I know it's just a dream for me. However, even if I only raise my ride 2 feet off the floor, that would still be higher than my jack stands so I'd be happy with that. Right now, with four jack stands at their limit, my face is still about an inch or two at most away from my underside - like today when I put my shift linkage back in. The warmest day we'll see in a while I think so it's my last chance until Spring. Boy, 2 feet off the floor. What a treat that would be.
Still, it isn't like it used to be. My mom never had a garage so I'd be working like most here I bet, in the dark and the rain and mud when I was young.
Things aren't perfect but they are much improved.
