winter storage & mice
Permalink

I just had a gentleman from Andy's Pest Control come and deposit 2 mouse traps in the garage. He said this company ranges as far as Bancroft to Bowmanville. I just thought that for those who store their vehicles over winter, they might like to know. I think it cost about $200 to do the house & garage. We only get 1 or 2 mice in the Fall usually and we have a cat but we have to keep our wives happy. A mouse in the house just freaks her out. Boy, women sure don't like mice and they don't even care about the car upholstery. Go figure.

Dollar store snap traps and peanut butter. I put them in the furnace room where I figure they come in (stone basement walls, 100 year old house)......I get a dozen or so each fall.

Same here, house built in 1853, lots of entries, and we are in the country surrounded by fields.. Traps with peanut butter and a firmly embedded piece of cracker. Works better then anything.

I opened the bbq for the first steak of the season and momma squirrel had just given birth to a full litter.  I'll admit I screamed a little and ran like hell when she bolted out!

12 traps??? that is $1.99 X 12 = $23.88 I got to quit welding and start a trap line at $200 a pop and I complain about the price of gas!.
I have 10 traps in my shop with peanut butter and the cats learnt real fast to leave them alone.

In my defence, I understand the poison in these traps lasts for ten years and helps ensure the mice die in their den, not in the walls of the house or garage or in my ride. But more importantly, the pest control service gives my wife peace of mind which gives me peace of mind.
Would I rather buy car parts with the money ? Hmm, gee, that's a tough one.

Dealing with mice is, as you say a piece of cake (or peanut butter). Eezy peezy.

But which one of you knows best how to deal with my wife ?
And before you answer, I should warn you, her birthday is the same day as Adolph Hitler's.

If it costs a couple hundred to keep her happy, then I can still buy car parts. THAT'S the math that matters in this equation.

But thank you all for your input. I thought mice were a real issue in this obsession so I tried to contribute what little I could.

I have a cargo trailer I use for swap meets and I shaved a bar of Irish spring with a cheese grater and left it on the floor along the walls... apparently it's suppose to detract the rodents... if anything it smells good in there.
Another one I heard of and my Father in-law uses cloves in his old cars to detract the mice.... and I also heard of tea bags will do the same....

Nothing really satisfies more than seeing the little buggers dead in a trap... then you know they're gone!

As far as squirrels go... I used a live trap and drove them up the road and released them in the bush all summer long until I painted a spot on one with fluorescent pink spray paint.... it turns out it was the same one returning over and over again... every time I caught him I dropped him off further and further down the highway even passed a creek.... until I finally drove 10 km from my house.....

LOL, I did that with a raccoon. It was a big female and she would just make her way back each time. Legally, I was allowed to relocate up to 3km or something so I moved her to the other side of the 401. If she makes it back from there, I am moving out!

I have caught 30 red squirrels so far. They'll strip a spruce bare if you let them. The net says 5 miles minimum so that's what I do every time. Getting to see the country countryside. My neighbours kill their rodents. I wasn't raised that way.

I was working late in the garage one night, bent over, trying to install a rad.  I looked down at my feet and there was my full size racoon friend looking up at me.  I suspect someone had been feeding her because she was not aggressive at all but it scared the living hell out of me!  If only I could teach her to sand filler.

If you think mice in the house is a problem, wait until the red squirrel gets in. It will destroy everything and they are not afraid of you. This is a bad infestation we are having with red squirrels and if you catch and release them, you are just providing breeding opportunity. That 30 probably means 100 more. Kill the suckers.

I grew up in North Bay and when I was a kid, a squirrel made my Dad’s garage his home.  Dad made a trap from wooden lath and capture the little fella, and we drove down Lakeshore Drive to find him a new home.  Wow, we didn’t realise how fast squirrels could chew wood!  That critter chewed through the trap and tore around the inside of the car while we were trying to defend ourselves, then blasted out an open window with us doing 30 mph.  Don’t know if he survived but he sure was in a hurry.

I have deer that eat anything green.
Then the cougars eat the deer.
So far, not bad.
