Front suspension bolt replacement

There is a bolt at the bottom of my front shock that I would like to replace with a grade 8 bolt.  After one of my rear suspension bolts sheared through, I want to avoid that happening again. But I am not sure which part of the suspension I should put the jack under to take pressure off the bolt so I can remove it ?  I was going to "just do it" but safety first, so I thought I'd ask.

The shock should not be loaded, so you can remove the bolt with the car sitting on the ground.

I personally would jack the car up and put the safety stands on the frame then use the jack to lift and lower the suspension to remove the shocks and to re-align the holes when replacing the bolts..
But do it any way you want... It's your project.

The shocks don't carry any weight. If they do, there is something wrong. They can be removed or installed either stretched or collapsed. They are shock absorbers, not springs, that is unless they are coil overs.
