I believe the term is running rich.  I am getting really poor gas mileage and I just cruise.  But it runs smooth and sounds fine. What can I do to improve my mileage ?

Have yuo pulled a couple plugs to see if it is in fact running rich?

I don't know exactly what my mileage is because I don't have my speedo hooked up yet but Bill was surprised to see me having to fill up so frequently. I guess I should get a longer speedo cable first to hook it up. Mine is 1.5" too short. Then I can see just how poor my mileage is. Pulling the plugs would be a good and simple idea. Thank you. I will check.

Ford and good mileage......kind of an oxymoron.

If you want to just cruise and be good on gas ?
Drive your Honda fit.

Or

Put a bigger gas tank in it. To save yourself from filling up so often.

I kicked in the other two carbs only once 2 years ago. I haven't pulled the plugs yet. Too busy this time of year mulching and raking. Well over 60 bags so far and I'm still building a deck. One lady comes and took away 30 bags and that helped get rid of them. Garage is an absolute mess. But my friend Bill gave me an old car cover which is really neat because the car gets filthy by Spring. Very busy time of year for me.

Should be able to track your mileage with a GPS unit if you have one.

.....only once 2 years ago?.........you must be a newer model than I am, my right foot has a mind of it's own.

I have a fear of cops. I can't outrun a radio.
I forgot about the GPS. Great idea.
I still have to pull the plugs. Just been really busy. Raked leaves for weeks and built a deck and well, it just goes on. But maybe I can check them today. 14.21 mpg isn't good.

your getting 14,2 and thats not good ? Problem with hot rod type vehicles is its not like your daily . hot rods rarely get to a steady state cruising speed . short trips , moving in and out of shop or laneway Most of our stuff has improper timing and tune for the set up of the engine , and whether its carbed or injected , has not been set on a tuning dyno . most of our rods are running with mismatched cams intakes exhaust s converters gearing , even weight distribution for optimum performance handling mileage etc . So if your getting an actual 14 mpg and making everybody thats bought a gm truck mad , then your doing ok

Would gear ratio have anything to do with it?

My friend Bill tells me my engine should be getting much better mileage and it is bugging him. He doesn't like my Strombergs and says they are too temperamental. I think he said he likes Carter or something like that. I probably have the name wrong. I checked on the pumpkin and the small tag under one of the bolts reads 'WAC A AT' and 'D1' just below that. No numbers indicating gear ratio.
I saw a car like mine on the net with a small Moon tank in front of the grill. If it doesn't interfere with cooling, maybe I could set up a reserve tank like in the old VWs and just switch tanks when I run low ? Always more to think about (and remember).
The bottom line though is I love my ride. Even if this is as good as it gets, I'm ok with that. When I hit a smooth road out in nowhere and cruise, it's divine.
Thank you Jarvis1 and 77.

Ditto on the mileage - most small blocks rarely got more than 14 or so mpg - rarely up to 18-19 mpg except out on the highway, and only if you have a 3.08 or less rear gear, or an overdrive tranny.
Coincidently - I am in the middle of this - changing my rear gear from 3.50s to a 3.00 and installing an OD trans in hopes of getting a little better mileage.
Mine gets about 14-15 mpg as well - but more so because it is currently turning 2700 rpm at 90 kph with tthis gear and small diameter tires.
I am hoping for 1600 rpm at 90 kph and maybe 19-20 mileage out on the highway.

That is reassuring Seeker1056. Thank you very much. I will research about a 3.08 or 3.00 gear and find out what I have now. 1600 rpm at 90 kph? I am anxious to get my GPS in or a longer speedo cable and see if I can improve my mileage but I guess I could get used to hitting more gas stations. I don't get my ride out very often anyway.

Could you try some taller tires on the back end?
No so fast off the line but maybe better gas milage.

When I wear this pair out I'll give that a try. It would add a bit more of a California rake as well (if that's the correct term). Thank you jarvis1

Hey Jim, if you have a cellphone you can download a free GPS speedometer app much easier than installing an old outdated GPS unit too!

Hey Chris: Thanks for that but I don't have a cell phone. I will add a cigarette lighter when I do my wiring and plug the old GPS into that or just finally get around to buying a longer speedo cable. But thanks again.
