I am hearing a lot about car / truck theft lately and would like to know what people here do to deter criminals ? I am planning to put in a hidden kill switch somewheree in the 42 truck and the 29 rod since I am doing the wiring soon anyway but maybe there is a better way ?
I just heard a segment on the radio about a guy who had blue tooth technology tracking his vehicle after thieves returned a 2nd time to steal his truck, the second time successfully. He tracked it moving around Toronto and then up to Vaughn and then to Montreal. He went to Montreal and found the container it was in and told the cops and CN Rail but no one would open the container so he could get his truck out. It went to Belgium and then to DuBai and he can still track it but authorities aren't helping.
I don't want to be in that situation. What does everyone recommend ? I heard thieves sometimes attend shows and put a tracking device on a vehicle and the return at night when they know where it is. Any advice is helpful. Thanks
Make sure to have an iron clad appraisal and agreed value policy. Use a reputable appraisal company that will stand up in court. Always remember Insurance companies are not your friend and even though they go into your bank account each month and help themselves to your money without question when it comes time they will do everything they can to deny your claim and the value. Apple air tags or even an old smart phone hidden inside might help but a good policy is the first line of defense. JMO
Cameras yeah they work great on your own property . But hooded up w face mask ?
My ex employers kid had about 30 k legit into a show / track event civic eg . Cameras showed it took about 15 seconds to steal out of yorkdale center parking lot . Cops told him sorry . But thru asking around and finding some seedier shops in the city . He got the motor and trans back but body chassis apparantly went in a container

Thank you very much 69SS454 and Iwannagofast, 77 and Jarvis1. It is nice to get a serious response to such an important issue. I had a good appraisal done on the 42. I guess I'll get the 29 done this year. Good idea.
Sorry, why do you need an appraisal? I haven't gotten one for years.
I told Hagerty I want 35 G's on the El Camino, and they said that it would be another 37 bucks a year.
Basically, agreed upon value and they charge accordingly.

Not all folks use Hagerty. When I insured the Nova with them because it was heavily modified they asked for an appraisal. Think they wanted to see if it had a cage. I also see it as insurance against your insurance. Helps document your car and can come in handy when/if ever selling. JMO
I definitely would get a appraisal,if it did happen to disappear or burn up,at least when you have to fight with the insurance company, you have documentation,I have to get one myself this year on my truck,I keep receipts and take extra pictures if I add something to a vehicle after the appraisel.

Recently had a friend get his 60K Harley stolen from hotel parking during Bike Week. He owns a large fleet of vehicles and had the bike with the same company (convenience). Had lots of receipts on the bike build and a 6 year old appraisal. Denied. Ins has offered 12k book value and won't budge. Mistakes on his end 100% but the end point is cover your ass..ets. Again Ins is not your friend. They are not on your side.
I have most of my receipts but some parts were bought for me. Otherwise, I am getting my appraisal in the Spring from the same guy in Bowmanville who appraised my truck.
I would look into those gps tracker devices . Ive heard / seen ones that dont initiate until you send it a code . That way they dont get picked up by a scan tool by theifs , if the gps locater is turned on 24/7 . Back in ontario A tech I knew worked at a construction co in city toronto . They had some mad hacker security guy . This guy had security drones security system . Example . big piece machinery gets parked at night , security drone sits in a charge port thing on the machine , Kinda like those robot vaccum cleaners . Drone realizes machine been parked in one spot since 6 pm . Its parked for the night . if some one comes and starts it or moves it , drone launches , goes up 100/200 feet in air , tracks and films the machine even if it gets loaded into a trailer , sends that info live back to hacker guy . He sends it to police . They go to the place where equip is , arrest people and equip is returned .
I heard the fastest one they did . the truck turned into a storage yard , there was a cruiser patrolling a few blocks away . Cops contacted and they got to scene before bad guys got a chance to lock the gates behind them ha ha .
But for personal , i,d look into tracker gps that get turned on by command signal . Cant hurt

A side note here, whoever you use for an appraisal you should check with your insurance company to see if they will accept his appraisal. This situation came up for me some years ago when Lant sold out to Haggerty. I had used the same guy for some years which Lant accepted then I got a notice from Haggerty they wouldn't recognize his no more.
Hagerty doesn't care about an appraisal. I have two of my fleet insured with them. They go with what ever you want for a value, your premium just goes up. They actually sent me an Email that said they thought my Coronet was under insured. TMJ

That happened with me also from Hagerty pertaining to my 50 truck about 13 years ago, about a year after i insured it. Truthfully i am glad i did have it apprised and got a real eye opener on truck prices. I inherited it and brought it up from New Brunswick not having any idea of truck values so i put a guess of 18 grand value on it for insurance, man i was way off. The appraisal came in at 56 grand and i was more than happy to pay the extra 40-50 ? bucks extra per year plus the appraisal cost just for the enlightenment on what they are worth. Not that i will ever sell it because of how i got it but it sure opened my eyes on old truck values, wow. There is a plus-minus to everything.

back in the 1990's when I drove stupidly easy to steal 80's dodges I used to install a keyed off / on switch in the power or ground wire leading to the fuel pump..
no electric pump makes driving it away kinda hard.. and gives some peace of mind
old trick for repeat offenders is razor blades taped or soldered along the back edge of your radio chassis
I think I would rather loose the radio and I think you would be charged for that. No gas or no battery ever stopped it from being winched onto a trailer.
